Some parts of the land are different. In the south-west, there are high mountains. These mountains get more rain. This helps things grow green.

Deep under the ground, there is water. This water comes up to make oases. Oases are green spots in the sand. People grow palm trees there.

Many countries live on this land. The largest one is Saudi Arabia. It is a very big and important place.

In ancient times, different groups named the land differently. The Greco-Roman world divided it into three regions. These were Petraea in the north, Deserta in the center, and Felix in the south. Arabia Felix was much greener and received more rainfall. This allowed for more productive farming. Later, medieval Muslim geographers used four main divisions. They named the Central Plateau, South Arabia, Al-Bahrain, and the Hejaz.

The landscape is mostly arid and extremely hot. There are very few permanent rivers or lakes. Instead, the land features ephemeral watercourses called wadis. These stay dry unless it rains. Deep underground, ancient aquifers hold water. When this water reaches the surface, it forms oases. The Al-Hasa and Qatif oases are two of the largest in the world. These areas allow for the growth of palm trees. Because of this, the peninsula produces more dates than any other region.
