These animals had long teeth.

Long ago, these animals lived on Earth.
These hunters could open their mouths very wide. This helped them use their long teeth. They could bite and then move away. They waited for their prey to get tired.
Some were small. Others grew to be as big as bears. They walked on land with strong legs. They lived in dry lands with little rain.
They had a very good sense of smell. They also had eyes that saw well. This helped them find food to eat.
Many of them died out a long time ago. It is fun to learn about them!
Gorgonopsians were powerful hunters from a long time ago. They lived during the Permian period. This was about 270 to 252 million years ago. These animals had long, narrow skulls. They also had very long teeth called canines. These teeth looked like sabres.
Some gorgonopsians were small. Others grew to be as big as bears.
These hunters had many tools to find food. They had a keen sense of smell. They also had binocular vision. This means their eyes worked together to see depth.
Gorgonopsians were powerful hunters that lived a very long time ago. They lived during the Middle to the Upper Permian. This was roughly between 270 and 252 million years ago. These animals belong to a group called therapsids. They were important because they became the top predators in their world. They lived on a single giant continent called Pangaea.
These hunters had very special tools for catching food. They had long, narrow skulls with huge canine teeth. These teeth looked like sabres used for stabbing or slashing.

Scientists have studied these creatures since the late 19th century.
There are many interesting facts about how they lived.

Eventually, these amazing hunters disappeared from the Earth.
Gorgonopsia is an extinct clade of sabre-toothed therapsids. These animals lived during the Middle to the Upper Permian periods. This was roughly between 270 and 252 million years ago. They were important members of the therapsid group. Therapsids are a group of animals that eventually led to mammals. Gorgonopsians rose to become apex predators in their environments. This means they were at the top of the food chain. They filled this role after the Capitanian mass extinction event. This event killed off other large groups like the dinocephalians.
The anatomy of a gorgonopsian was built for hunting. They possessed long and narrow skulls. Their most famous feature was their elongated upper canine teeth. These teeth acted like sabre-like weapons for stabbing or slashing. To use these teeth, they needed an enormous gape. A gape is how wide an animal can open its mouth. Gorgonopsians could open their jaws in excess of 90 degrees. They did not need to unhinge their jaws to do this. Most species had five incisors in the upper jaw. They also had four incisors on the bottom. Their postcanine teeth, which are the teeth behind the canines, were often reduced or missing. Some species, like Clelandina, lacked these teeth entirely.
Scientists believe these predators used a specific hunting strategy. They likely used a bite-and-retreat tactic to catch large prey. First, they would ambush a target and deliver a debilitating bite. Then, they would follow the animal from a safe distance. They waited until the injuries exhausted the prey. Once the target was weak, the gorgonopsian would grapple it. Finally, they would deliver a killing bite.
