Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana. It serves as the nation's primary center for finance, retail, and administration. The city is located in the Demerara-Mahaica region, which is known as Region 4. It sits on the Atlantic Ocean coast at the mouth of the Demerara River estuary.

Because it hosts the country's government and major businesses, Georgetown accounts for a large portion of Guyana's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The city is often called the "Garden City of the Caribbean."

The physical landscape of Georgetown consists of flat coastal plains. The terrain is very low, with some elevations falling below the high tide level. To protect the city from the ocean, a long retaining wall called a seawall was built. The city also uses an innovative drainage system. This system includes a network of canals and kokers, which are specialized sluice gates. These kokers help drain excess water from the city to prevent flooding.

Georgetown experiences a tropical rainforest climate characterized by warm temperatures year-round. The North-East trade winds blow in from the North Atlantic. These winds help moderate the heat, so temperatures rarely rise above 31 degrees Celsius. It is a very wet place, as precipitation occurs in every month of the year. There is no true dry season, though relative humidity is lower from September to November. Humidity levels are highest during May, June, August, and the period from December to January.

The history of the city involves several different colonial influences. In 1748, Governor Laurens Storm van 's Gravesande built a guard post at the mouth of the Demerara River. English planters eventually built houses around this post, forming a small village. The town was officially established in 1782 during a French occupation of the Dutch colony. Originally named Longchamps, the town was renamed Stabroek in 1784. This name honored Nicholaas Geelvinck, the President of the Dutch West India Company. In 1812, under British rule, the name changed to Georgetown to honor King George III.
