Life was often very difficult for Felix during these years. In 1904, his fiancée Julia Goldman died in Switzerland. He felt very sad after she passed away. Later, he married Zofia Muszkat in 1910. Their son, Janek, was born while Zofia was in prison. Felix had to work very hard to find his family. He was a master at hiding from the police. The police files said he was a very dangerous man. He eventually joined Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik party in 1917. This party helped bring them to power during the October Revolution.

After the revolution, Felix took on a very powerful role. Lenin named him the head of the Cheka in December 1917. The Cheka was the first Soviet secret police group. During the Russian Civil War, the Cheka grew much larger. It began a period called the Red Terror. This was a time of mass arrests and executions. It is estimated that the Cheka executed 50,000 to 200,000 people. Felix stayed in charge as the group changed names to the GPU and the OGPU.

He was a Polish revolutionary and a high-ranking politician. Dzerzhinsky is best known for leading the first three Soviet secret police organizations. These groups were called the Cheka, the GPU, and the OGPU. He helped build the security systems for the Bolshevik government. His leadership helped shape how the state maintained control over its people. Because of his intense work, he earned the nickname "Iron Felix."

His early life was shaped by his family's noble Polish roots. He was born on September 11, 1877, at the Ozhyemblovo estate. This estate was located in Russian Poland, which is now part of Belarus.

His family belonged to the "column-listed nobility." This meant their noble status was formally recognized by the Russian Empire. Dzerzhinsky was a very talented student who became a polyglot. He could speak Polish, Russian, German, and Latin. However, his education at the Vilnius Gymnasium ended early. He was expelled for his involvement in revolutionary politics.

Before the revolution, Dzerzhinsky lived a life of constant struggle and movement. He joined the Union of Workers in 1895 to pursue Marxist ideas. This path led to many arrests by the tsarist secret police, known as the Okhrana. He was exiled to Siberia several times to serve as punishment. In 1902, he was sent to the remote town of Vilyuysk for five years. During this time, he managed to escape from prison on a boat. He eventually moved to Berlin to work with other leaders like Rosa Luxemburg.

Personal loss also played a major role in his life during these years. In 1904, his fiancée, Julia Goldman, died of tuberculosis in Switzerland. Dzerzhinsky wrote that he felt his life had lost its meaning. He eventually found new purpose through the Russian Revolution of 1905. Later, he married Zofia Muszkat in 1910. Their son, Janek, was born while Zofia was serving time in prison. Dzerzhinsky often had to hide from the police to care for his family. The Okhrana found him very difficult to catch because of his skills in secrecy.

In 1917, the political landscape of Russia changed forever. Dzerzhinsky joined Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik party during the October Revolution. This event brought the Bolsheviks to power in Russia. In December 1917, Lenin appointed Dzerzhinsky as the head of the Cheka. The Cheka was the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission. Its main job was to stop counter-revolutionary activities. As the Russian Civil War progressed, the Cheka's power expanded greatly. This period included a campaign known as the Red Terror.

The Red Terror involved mass arrests and many executions. Historical estimates suggest that the Cheka executed between 50,000 and 200,000 people. Dzerzhinsky remained at the top of the security services as they changed names. In 1922, the Cheka became the State Political Directorate, or GPU. A year later, it was reorganized again as the OGPU. Dzerzhinsky continued to lead these powerful organizations until his death. He also served as a director for the national economy in 1924.

Dzerzhinsky died of a heart attack on July 20, 1926. He was buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Moscow.

His legacy remains a subject of intense debate. Secret police agents, known as "Chekists," viewed him as a hero of the revolution. On the other hand, critics see him as a symbol of state brutality. A large statue of him stood at the Lubyanka Building in Moscow for many years. It was not removed until 1991. His life connects the era of imperial Russia to the rise of the Soviet state.
