Ricardo Martínez and Paul Sereno found them during field work. They worked with the University of Chicago and the University of San Juan. The fossils were found in muddy siltstone. This was part of the Ischigualasto Formation in Argentina. It took almost 12 months to collect the main skeleton. This skeleton was then sent to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Experts there worked to prepare the bones for study.
