The airline's history is marked by rapid growth and expansion. In its early years, Emirates grew by an average of 30% annually. During the Gulf War, the airline continued flying during the final ten days of the conflict. This helped boost its business. In 1991, the airline successfully acquired slots at London Heathrow. By 1996, it took delivery of its first Boeing 777-200. In 2000, the airline launched its Skywards frequent flyer program. 
Financial success has been a consistent part of the airline's story. Emirates has recorded a profit every year except for its second year. In its first 11 years, the company doubled in size every 3.5 years. Since then, it has doubled every four years. In 2015, the airline paid dividends worth US$708 million. Since dividends began in 1999, the Dubai government has received AED 14.6 billion. In 2023, the airline announced a $200 million investment. This money will fund research into reducing fossil fuel use in aviation.
The airline employs a very large and diverse workforce. At the end of March 2020, the company had 59,519 staff members. This included 21,789 cabin crew and 4,313 flight deck crew. Engineering staff numbered 3,316. The entire Emirates Group employs 105,730 people. 
Emirates is also a well-known brand through various sponsorships. The airline sponsored the Emirates Air Line cable cars in London.
