Korean Air has a long and evolving history. Its roots trace back to Korean National Airlines, which was founded in 1946. In 1962, the government of the Republic of Korea acquired it. They renamed the company Korean Air Lines. On March 1, 1969, the Hanjin Group acquired the state-owned airline. This date marks the beginning of the modern Korean Air.

Throughout its growth, the airline has used various aircraft types. In 1973, it introduced the Boeing 747 for trans-Pacific routes. It also used the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 for European services to Paris. By 1975, it became an early Asian operator of Airbus aircraft. It purchased three Airbus A300s for immediate use on Asian routes. In the 1990s, the airline used the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. However, the MD-11 did not meet performance requirements. Consequently, those planes were eventually converted into freighters.

The airline faced a difficult period regarding its safety record. Around 1999, it was known for a high rate of fatal crashes. During this time, its hull-loss rate was 4.79 per million departures. This was 17 times higher than the rate for United Airlines. In 1999, South Korea's President Kim Dae-jung called the record an embarrassment.

Korean Air is currently undergoing a major transformation through a merger. In November 2020, it was announced that Korean Air would merge with Asiana Airlines. This process faced delays because foreign authorities had concerns about monopolies. However, the acquisition of Asiana Airlines was completed on December 12, 2024. This deal was worth 1.5 trillion won, or about 1.6 billion USD.

This merger makes Korean Air the 12th largest airline in the world by international capacity. The brand of Asiana will be fully absorbed by 2027.

To mark this new era, the airline introduced a major rebrand. On March 11, 2025, it unveiled a new corporate identity. This was done in partnership with the design agency Lippincott. The existing Taegeuk symbol lost its red and blue colors. It now uses a monochromatic dark blue outline instead.

The company also replaced its old typeface with "Korean Air Sans." This new font was designed by Dalton Maag. The rebranding aims to enhance visibility and elegance. New uniforms for unified staff will arrive in 2027.

Today, Korean Air connects various industries and cultures. It is a key part of the SkyTeam alliance. It also operates Jin Air, a low-cost carrier. This subsidiary was created in 2007 to compete with high-speed rail. The airline even uses modern culture to engage passengers. For example, it featured the K-pop group SuperM in a safety video.
