This top supported a metal shoe anchored by large bolts. The drawing office produced 1,700 general drawings and 3,629 detailed drawings for the project.

Once the foundations were set, the ironwork erection began on June 30, 1887. The tower is composed of 18,038 individual pieces. These components were manufactured at a factory in Levallois-Perret. They were transported to the site on horse-drawn carts.

Workers joined these pieces using 2.5 million rivets. No drilling or shaping was done on the construction site. If a part did not fit perfectly, it was sent back to the factory. During construction, the legs were built as cantilevers. A large timber scaffold was later used to ensure structural integrity. This period caused some public concern regarding the stability of the tower.

At the time of its completion, the tower was a record-breaking structure. It was the first structure in the world to surpass both the 200-meter and 300-meter marks.

During construction, it surpassed the Washington Monument to become the tallest human-made structure in the world. It held this title for 41 years until the Chrysler Building was finished in 1930.
