However, research shows that experts sometimes use intuition instead of long lists. They might use quick thinking when they are under a lot of pressure.

Many factors can change how a person thinks. A complex environment has many things changing at once. Studies at the University of Colorado show that complex places can help thinking. A room with many small objects might actually help a person decide better. But too much information can cause a problem called information overload. Psychologist George Armitage Miller said our brains can only hold a limited amount of data. Too much knowledge can even create an "illusion of knowledge."

Decision-making also involves different types of knowledge. People often use explicit knowledge, which is information that is clearly stated. They also use tacit knowledge, which is more intuitive or understood without being stated. Usually, these two types of knowledge work together to fill gaps in complex processes. Scientists also study human performance from different perspectives. The psychological perspective looks at individual needs and values. The cognitive perspective sees decision-making as a continuous interaction with the environment. The normative perspective focuses on the strict logic of the choices made.

Research shows that the environment can change how we think. A complex environment contains many different states that change over time. Studies at the University of Colorado found that environmental complexity can actually increase cognitive function. In one experiment, researchers measured complexity by the number of small objects and appliances in a room. They found that more complex environments helped people think more clearly about a situation. This suggests that the location where a decision is made can influence the quality of that decision.

However, too much information can lead to problems like information overload. This happens when there is a gap between the volume of data and our ability to use it. Decision fatigue occurs when making many decisions leads to a decline in skill. As people make choices over an extended time, they lose the mental energy needed for analysis. This can lead to impulsive decision-making, where a person acts without thinking. It can also lead to decision avoidance, where a person avoids the situation entirely. Finally, neuroscience shows that specific brain regions are involved in these processes. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex are key areas. Damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex can make it very difficult for a person to make advantageous decisions.
