In this experiment, participants read a description of a woman named Linda. The description suggested she might be a feminist. When asked if she was more likely a bank teller or a bank teller and an activist, most chose the latter. This is known as the conjunction fallacy. Even though the second option is statistically less likely, it seemed more "representative" of the description.

There is a major debate regarding these findings. A "rationality war" occurred between the Kahneman and Tversky school and Gerd Gigerenzer. Gigerenzer argues that heuristics are not necessarily defects. He views them as "rules of thumb" or "gut feelings." He believes they can be ecologically rational and help us make accurate decisions. Recent advances in cognitive neuroscience suggest some behaviors labeled as biases might actually be optimal strategies. This shows that human thinking is complex and highly functional.

Biases can be categorized by how they affect us. Some are specific to groups, while others affect individuals. Some impact decision-making, such as the sunk costs fallacy.
