Cuba is an island nation located in the Caribbean Sea.

The history of Cuba began thousands of years ago. Humans first settled the island around 6,000 years ago. These early migrations came from northern South America or Central America. Their arrival is linked to the extinction of native animals, like endemic sloths. Later, the Taíno people arrived from South America about 1,700 years ago. The Taíno were skilled at making pottery and intensive agriculture. They lived on the island until Spanish colonization began in the 15th century. The Guanahatabey people also lived in the western part of the island.
Spanish rule changed the island forever starting in 1492. Christopher Columbus landed on October 28 of that year. He claimed the land for Spain and named it Isla Juana. The first permanent Spanish settlement was founded in 1511 at Baracoa. Later, Havana became the capital in 1607. During this era, the Spanish used the encomienda system. This was a repressive colonial system that forced indigenous people to work. Many Taíno died from infectious diseases like smallpox and measles. By the mid-18th century, the population included many different heritages. Many Africans were brought to the island as slaves. Between 1790 and 1820, about 325,000 Africans were imported.
Cuban independence movements grew throughout the 19th century. In 1868, a planter named Carlos Manuel de Céspedes led a rebellion. He is often called the Father of the Homeland. This conflict became known as the Ten Years' War. Later, José Martí founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party in 1892. Martí became a national hero after he died in battle in 1895. The Spanish-American War of 1898 eventually led to Spanish rule ending. The United States occupied Cuba for a short time. Cuba finally gained its independence in 1902.
Political shifts in the 20th century led to a new kind of government. In 1952, Fulgencio Batista took power in a coup d'état. This ended a period of democratic rule. In January 1959, the 26th of July Movement overthrew Batista. This event was known as the Cuban Revolution. Fidel Castro became the leader and established communist rule. Cuba became a major player in the Cold War. In 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred. This was the closest the Cold War came to nuclear war.

Today, Cuba is a socialist state. The Communist Party's role is written into the Constitution. It is the only communist country in the world located outside of Asia. The government uses a planned economy. This means the state manages most economic activities. The economy relies on tourism and exports. These exports include sugar, tobacco, coffee, and skilled labor. Cuba has a universal health care system. This provides free medical treatment to all citizens. However, the system faces many challenges. Doctors often have low salaries and lack essential drugs.
Life in Cuba involves many social and economic complexities. In the 1990s, the country entered the Special Period. This was a severe economic downturn following the fall of the Soviet Union. Since then, leadership has changed several times. Fidel Castro retired in 2008 after 49 years. He was succeeded by Raúl Castro. In 2018, Miguel Díaz-Canel became president. He is the first leader born after the revolution. Despite economic struggles, Cuba has high literacy rates. It also has high life expectancy and low infant mortality. The island remains a culturally significant part of Latin America.
