Some animals are called crocodilians.

Crocodilians are amazing animals.

Crocodilians are powerful reptiles that live in water and on land.
There are three main groups of crocodilians. The first group is true crocodiles. The second group is alligators and caimans. The third group is the gharial and false gharial.

Most crocodilians eat meat. They are strong swimmers. They can also walk on land with their legs held straight. They are ectotherms, which means they are cold-blooded. This means they rely on the sun for warmth.
Crocodilians are amazing reptiles that live in both water and on land.

Most crocodilians have a very similar way their bodies work. They have flat heads with long snouts and thick, scaly skin.

Crocodilians have a long and interesting history on Earth. Their ancestors, called pseudosuchians, appeared about 250 million years ago.

There are many different types of crocodilians with unique features.

Humans have lived alongside crocodilians for a very long time. People in Ancient Egypt even included them in their art and stories.

Crocodilia is an order of semiaquatic, predatory reptiles. These animals are known as crocodilians. They are incredibly significant because they are the closest living relatives of birds. Together, they are the only known survivors of the Archosauria. This group of animals has existed for a very long time. The specific order Crocodilia appeared about 83.5 million years ago. This was during the Late Cretaceous period, specifically the Campanian stage.
The evolution of crocodilians is a long and complex process. Their ancestors, called pseudosuchians, appeared about 250 million years ago. These ancestors lived during the Early Triassic period and diversified throughout the Mesozoic era.

Modern crocodilians are divided into three main families. The first is Crocodylidae, which includes the true crocodiles. The second is Alligatoridae, which contains alligators and caimans.

All crocodilians share a very similar body structure. They have wide, cylindrical torsos and flat heads. Their nostrils, eyes, and ears are all located on the top of the head. This allows them to stay mostly submerged while still breathing and watching.

There are distinct physical differences between the families. Alligators and caimans usually have broad, U-shaped jaws. When they close their mouths, you only see their upper teeth.

Crocodilians live in many different environments. Most live in freshwater habitats in warm, tropical areas. You can find them in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. However, some species can live in saline environments. Some can even swim out to sea. They are mostly carnivores, but their diets vary. The gharial is a specialized feeder. In contrast, the saltwater crocodile has a more generalized diet. They are usually solitary and territorial animals. However, they sometimes hunt together in groups.
Human interaction with crocodilians has a long history. Artistic and literary works have featured them since Ancient Egypt.
