People used to think they lived in the water like swimmers. Now, we know they were entirely terrestrial animals. This means they lived on dry land. They likely spent their time walking and perhaps even digging for food.

There were many different kinds of aetosaurs. Scientists have described over 20 different genera. One group is called Desmatosuchia and another is Aetosaurinae. These groups are named based on how their skulls look. Some aetosaurs were quite small, like Aetosaurus, which was about one meter long. Others were much larger. For example, some typothoracines could grow to 3 meters in length. These large animals could weigh as much as 110 kg.

They belong to the order Aetosauria, a name meaning "eagle lizard." These animals were pseudosuchians, a branch of archosaurs. This means they were more closely related to modern crocodilians than to birds or non-avian dinosaurs. Aetosaurs were medium- to large-sized animals that lived on land. Most were herbivores, meaning they ate plants, or omnivores, which eat both plants and meat. Because their armored plates are so common in the fossil record, they are used as index fossils. This means scientists use them to accurately date the rock layers where they are found.

The most famous feature of an aetosaur was its heavy armor. They possessed bony plates called osteoderms that protected their bodies.

These plates grew in four distinct rows along the back to form a protective shell called a carapace. The two inner rows are called paramedian osteoderms. These plates were often wide and featured decorative pits or grooves. The two outer rows are known as lateral osteoderms. These plates often had a shape with two flanges, or flat surfaces. One flange sat level with the back, while the other wrapped down the side of the body. Many aetosaurs even had osteoderms on their bellies, called ventral osteoderms. These belly plates were usually smaller and flatter than the ones on their backs.

An aetosaur's skull was quite unique and small compared to its body.

They lacked teeth at the very front of their snouts and jaws. The teeth they did have were often small and bulbous. Some teeth were shaped like leaves with serrated edges, which helped with eating plants. However, a few species had ziphodont teeth. These teeth were curved, flattened, and serrated, which is a shape usually seen in meat-eaters. In some groups, like the Desmatosuchia, the snout was expanded into a flat shape. This looked much like the snout of a modern pig. This shape might have helped the animal dig in the ground for food.

They were quadrupeds, meaning they walked on four legs. Their hindlimbs used a pillar-erect posture. In this arrangement, the femur, or thigh bone, connects vertically to the hip. This allowed the legs to act like sturdy pillars directly beneath the body. To handle the heavy armor, their skeletons had special reinforcements. They had enlarged bone attachments on their legs and ribs. Some of the largest species even had extra structural supports between their vertebrae, or spine bones. While their hind legs were pillar-like, their smaller forelimbs may have had a more sprawling stance.

Scientists divide aetosaurs into two main groups based on their skull shapes. These groups are Desmatosuchia and Aetosaurinae.

The typothoracines were a type of aetosaur with very wide, disc-shaped armor. Some of these large animals could reach 3 meters in length. They could also weigh as much as 110 kg. The desmatosuchines had narrower bodies and lacked belly armor. Instead, they often had very spiny armor on their necks. Some members of this group, like Desmatosuchus, were among the largest aetosaurs ever found. Other aetosaurs were much smaller and more slender, such as the genus Aetosaurus, which was only about one meter long.

Our understanding of these animals has changed significantly over time.

This detail helps scientists understand how different archosaurs are connected. By studying the structure of their osteoderms, researchers can trace how these animals evolved.
