There are many ways to do this work. In a woodland, people often harvest in sections called coups. A coup is a French word that means a cut. They might also call these areas a cant, a panel, or a fall. By cutting in sections, a new crop is ready every year. Some trees grow back quickly. For example, birch can be cut on a three or four-year cycle. Oak takes much longer, sometimes a fifty-year cycle. This cycle depends on the tree type and how the wood is used.

This practice has been around for a very long time. Evidence shows people have used coppicing since pre-history. You can even see it in very old things. In Somerset, timber from the Sweet Track dates to 3807 BCE. That wood was from a Tilia species that was coppiced. In the past, people used this wood to make charcoal. Charcoal was used to fuel metalworking for thousands of years. In England, Roman and Medieval ironmasters guarded large woods to keep their charcoal supply safe.

Coppicing creates a special home for nature. Because the trees are different ages, the forest has many habitats. This is very good for biodiversity. Some people use a system called coppice with standards. This means they leave some big trees to grow tall. These are called standards. They might leave twelve standards in each acre. These big trees provide large timber for ships or bridges. The smaller coppice wood is used for things like fences or baskets.

Today, we still see the results of this old skill. In southern England, some people still work with coppices. In Kent and Sussex, sweet chestnut is still grown on a large scale. These trees are cut every 12 to 18 years. They are used to make poles for growing hops. Other people use coppiced wood for crafts like making hurdles or thatch. Even though we use coal now, coppicing keeps our woodlands healthy and full of life.

These shoots can be used while they are young and flexible. Or, they can be allowed to grow into long, straight poles. These poles are often better than natural trees because they lack bends and forks.

Woodland managers often use different systems to organize their harvests. A common method is to harvest in sections called coups. The word coup comes from the French term for a cut. These sections are also called cants, panels, or falls depending on the region. By rotating through these sections, a worker ensures a new crop is available every year. Some areas use simple coppice, which involves only one species. Others use compound coppice. In a compound system, two or more species are grown in the same area but cut on different cycles. For example, hazel might be cut every seven years, while ash is cut every twenty-one years.

Another important system is known as coppice with standards. In this method, most trees are cut for small wood, but some are left to grow into large trees. These large trees are called standards. Historically, managers might leave twelve standards per acre. These standards provide large timber for building houses, repairing bridges, or making carts. This system provides great flexibility for a forest. It produces small materials like hazel for wattle infill and large timber for shipbuilding.

Coppicing has a very deep history. Evidence suggests it has been practiced since pre-history. Archaeologists can identify coppiced timber by the characteristic curve at the base of the stems. This curve happens as competing shoots grow out from the stool and then reach for the sky. In Somerset, timber from the Sweet Track dates back to 3807 BCE. This wood belonged to the Tilia species and was coppiced. In the medieval period, coppicing was vital for the charcoal industry. Charcoal was the primary fuel for metalworking. The length of a coppice cycle depends on the tree species and its intended use. Birch can be cut on a three- or four-year cycle to make faggots. Oak requires a much longer cycle, sometimes fifty years, to produce poles or firewood. In southern England, sweet chestnut is still grown on a large commercial scale. These trees are cut on a 12-to-18-year cycle to produce poles for hops.

Other species like willow are used for wicker-work, and chestnut is used in France for martial arts canes.

Beyond timber, coppicing is essential for biodiversity. Because a coppiced woodland always contains trees of many different ages, it creates a rich variety of habitats. This diversity supports many different types of wildlife. While modern forestry often uses mechanical harvesting in high forests, coppicing remains important for conservation. It preserves cultural traditions and protects the environment. Even as coal and coke replaced charcoal as industrial fuels, the value of these managed landscapes remains high.
