Initially, Buddhism was not fully understood by the local population. Many people confused it with Taoism because the two shared similarities. Confucian elites also criticized the new foreign religion. To help people understand, missionaries had to translate Indian scriptures into Chinese.

Early translators included An Shigao in Luoyang and the Kushan monk Lokakṣema. Later, the scholar Kumārajīva provided high-quality translations that had a massive impact. He introduced the Madhyamaka school, which became known as the Sanlun or Three Treatise school.

As the religion grew, several distinct schools of thought emerged. Each school offered different ways to practice and understand the world. The Tiantai school was founded by the master Zhiyi and focuses on the Lotus Sutra. The Huayan school is based on the works of masters like Dushun and Fazang. The Pure Land tradition involves the veneration of Amitabha.

There is also Zhenyan Buddhism, which is a form of Esoteric Buddhism. This school arrived in China between 716 and 720 CE during the Tang dynasty. These various schools allowed different people to connect with the faith in different ways.

The Tang dynasty was a golden age for Chinese Buddhism. During this era, the religion spread across all social classes. Many emperors promoted the faith, including Empress Wu Zetian. She was a famous leader who supported the Longmen cave complexes.

The monk Xuanzang also played a vital role during this time. He traveled to India and returned with many new Buddhist texts. His detailed reports are still important for studying ancient India. His work helped establish the Yogachara, or Consciousness-only, tradition in East Asia.

However, the religion faced difficult times during certain periods of history. Between 841 and 845 CE, the Great Anti-Buddhist Persecution occurred under Emperor Wuzong. The state needed more tax revenue and wealth, which led to this crackdown.

Later, the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period caused political upheaval. This instability caused some Buddhist traditions to shrink or even disappear. During the Yuan dynasty, the government supported Tibetan Buddhism instead. When the Ming dynasty took over, they expelled Tibetan lamas and called that path unorthodox.

Despite these challenges, Buddhism remained deeply influential in Chinese culture. During the Song dynasty, Chan Buddhism became the most dominant school. It had strong ties to the imperial government and an organized system of administration.

This era saw the development of the Five Houses of Chan. It also produced famous meditation methods like silent illumination. These Chinese Chan traditions eventually shaped Zen Buddhism in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The religion's influence can be seen in the art of the Mogao Caves and the Longmen Grottoes.

Today, Chinese Buddhism is considered highly syncretic. This means it has blended many different belief systems together. It draws heavily from Confucianism, Taoism, and Chinese folk religion.

The Chinese Buddhist canon includes these various traditions and their rituals. This blending allows the religion to remain a central part of East Asian life. It connects ancient Indian philosophy with the deep traditions of China.
