Nature and water have changed here over time. In the past, the Dnieper River flooded the eastern plains often. This happened because the river level would rise unexpectedly. In the 20th century, people built many dams along the river. These dams are part of hydroelectric power plants. They help control the flow of the water. This makes the low lands much safer for people to live on. Today, the river stays within its banks more steadily.

Cherkasy Oblast is a province located in central Ukraine. It is also known as Cherkashchyna. The region sits along the Dnieper River. This river flows from the south toward the north.
The geography of the oblast is defined by the Dnieper River. The river divides the territory into two unequal sections. The western bank is hilly and belongs to the Dnieper Upland. The eastern bank is a low-lying plain. In the past, the eastern plains suffered from frequent flooding. This changed during the 20th century. Engineers built multiple dams for hydroelectric power plants. These plants control the river's flow. This control prevents the frequent flooding that once occurred.
