The republic is part of the North Caucasian Federal District. It is a place where many different cultures live together. This diversity is reflected in its official languages. There are five: Russian, Abaza, Cherkess (Kabardian), Karachay-Balkar, and Nogai. The capital city of the republic is Cherkessk. As of the 2021 census, the population was 469,865 people.

The geography of the region is defined by massive mountains. About 80% of the territory is covered by the Caucasus Mountains. Only a small strip at the northern edge belongs to the Don Steppe. The republic shares borders with several neighbors. To the west is Krasnodar Krai. To the northeast lies Stavropol Krai. To the southeast is the Kabardino-Balkar Republic. To the southwest, it shares an international border with Georgia. A famous landmark is Mount Elbrus. This is the highest peak in Europe. It sits on the border with Kabardino-Balkaria.

Water is a vital part of this landscape. There are 172 rivers flowing through the republic. The largest rivers include the Kuban, Bolshoy Zelenchuk, Maly Zelenchuk, Urup, and Laba. The mountains also hold about 130 lakes. These are lakes of glacial origin, meaning they were formed by glaciers. The area is also rich in mineral springs. The climate is generally moderate. This includes short winters and long, warm, humid summers. Annual precipitation varies between the plains and the mountains. The land also contains natural resources like gold, coal, and clays.

The history of the region involves significant political shifts. It began as the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Oblast in 1922. In 1926, it was split into two separate parts. These were the Karachay Autonomous Oblast and the Cherkess National Okrug. In 1943, the Karachay Autonomous Oblast was abolished. This happened because the Karachay people were accused of collaboration with the Nazis. Consequently, 70,000 Karachay people were deported to the Kazakh and Uzbek republics. Their territory was split between Stavropol Krai and the Georgian SSR. In 1957, the areas were rejoined due to the rehabilitation of the Karachay.

After the Soviet Union changed, the republic's status evolved again. On July 3, 1991, it became an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1992, there were discussions about splitting the republic. Russian President Boris Yeltsin introduced laws to reconstitute the separate Karachay and Cherkess areas. However, a referendum was held on March 28, 1992. The majority of the population voted against splitting the republic. On December 9, 1992, it was officially recognized as the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.
