During World War I, people even used earth from cave bear sites to find phosphates. This meant many important bones were lost or kept only as skulls and leg bones.
There are many interesting facts about how these bears looked and lived. Cave bears were as large as, or even larger than, the biggest bears alive today. Male cave bears were very heavy, and females were also quite large. Scientists have found many skeletons in places like Germany and Poland. In 1983, 140 skeletons were found in a place called Bears' Cave in Romania. 
Even though they lived long ago, we can still learn about them today. Scientists can study tiny bits of DNA from old teeth to see how they were related to other animals. This research shows they were closely related to brown bears and polar bears. 
The cave bear, known scientifically as Ursus spelaeus, was a prehistoric species of bear. It lived across Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. This massive animal became extinct approximately 24,000 years ago. This extinction occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum, a period of intense cold. 
Evolutionary history shows that cave bears and brown bears shared a common ancestor. This ancestor was a species called Ursus etruscus from the Early Pleistocene. Scientists estimate their lineages split about 1.2 to 1.5 million years ago. The earliest known relative in the cave bear lineage is Ursus deningeri. This species appeared in the fossil record between 1.2 and 0.8 million years ago. 
To survive on a diet of plants, cave bears underwent significant physical changes. They were primarily herbivorous, meaning they ate mostly vegetation. Over time, they lost three anterior premolars, which are small teeth in the front of the mouth. To compensate for this loss, they experienced a process called molarization. In molarization, the last remaining premolar merged with the true molars. This created larger teeth with more cusps and better cutting edges. 
While many scientists view them as herbivores, new evidence suggests they were actually omnivorous. Omnivores eat both plants and animal protein. Analysis of dental microwear, which looks at tiny scratches on teeth, shows they ate meat. Some populations in Belgium likely consumed insects and mammal meat before hibernation. In some areas, they may have even scavenged bones of animals that died. 
Cave bears were massive animals with distinct physical features. They had very broad, domed skulls and steep foreheads. Their stout bodies included long thighs and massive shins. They were as large as, or even larger than, the biggest modern bears. Male cave bears were particularly heavy, while females were also quite large. Interestingly, 90% of museum skeletons are classified as male. This happened because of an old misconception that female skeletons were just "dwarfs." Their size actually changed with the climate to help manage heat loss.
Human discovery of these bears has a long and strange history. In 1774, Johann Friedrich Esper first described their skeletons in a book. At that time, some people thought the bones belonged to dragons or unicorns. Later, the anatomist Johann Christian Rosenmüller gave them their scientific name.
