Archaeologists have debated the exact timeline of settlement in Eastern and Central Polynesia. However, a generally accepted timeline places the settlement of the Cook Islands before 1000 AD. From there, navigation branched out to the Society Islands and the Marquesas. More remote regions like Hawaii, Easter Island, and New Zealand were peopled later. The people of Easter Island likely came from Mangareva. They may have used the flight paths of sooty terns to find the island. These ancient maritime skills are not just history. As of 2014, traditional methods are still taught in Taumako and by various voyaging societies. While these techniques were once guarded as guild secrets, they are now being recorded and published for the modern world.
