Chagas’s most significant discovery involved a complex biological cycle. He observed large, blood-sucking insects in rural houses. These insects belong to the genus Triatoma. People often call them "kissing bugs" or "assassin bugs." In Portuguese, they are called "barbeiro" because they bite faces at night. Chagas investigated whether these bugs carried parasites. He found flagellate protozoans inside the insects' intestines. He named this parasite Trypanosoma cruzi to honor his friend, Oswaldo Cruz. 
The discovery moved from animals to humans through careful observation. Chagas found the parasite in the blood of a cat. He then identified the same parasite in a two-year-old girl named Berenice Soares de Moura. He took her blood samples on April 14, 1909. This confirmed that Trypanosoma cruzi could infect humans. Chagas also found the parasite in the brain and the myocardium, which is the heart muscle. He realized the infection could lead to serious conditions. These include chronic heart disease, known as Chagas cardiomyopathy. He also noted links to brain disorders and thyroid problems like goiter.
Chagas also made a major discovery regarding fungi. While studying guinea pigs, he found the parasitic fungal genus Pneumocystis. At first, he thought it was part of the life cycle of the protozoan. However, other scientists later identified it as a separate organism. The genus was eventually named Pneumocystis by Pierre and Marie Delanoë in 1912. This fungus later became known for its link to AIDS patients. Chagas was a pioneer in identifying these different types of microscopic organisms. His ability to distinguish between different pathogens was essential for medical science.
Chagas’s path to science was shaped by many life events. He was born in Brazil to parents of Portuguese descent. His father died when he was only four years old. During his education, he suffered from beri-beri, a disease that stopped his engineering studies. His uncle, a physician, encouraged him to study medicine instead. Chagas joined the Medical School of Rio de Janeiro in 1896. He was a very dedicated student. People called him the "two-candle student" because he used two candles every night to study. This was necessary because Rio de Janeiro lacked electricity at the time.
His career was marked by many leadership roles and honors. He worked at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute for most of his life. He later became the director of the Department of Health in Brazil. Chagas helped organize health campaigns for many issues, including the Spanish flu and tuberculosis. He even founded the concept of sanitary medicine. In 1912, he won the Schaudinn Prize for his work in tropical medicine. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1913 and 1921.
