It began when a fracture in the supercontinent Pangaea split the land apart. During the Jurassic period, deep basins emerged through a process called rifting. This rifting helped create the Atlantic Ocean. Over time, the sea took a shape very close to what we see today. 
The seafloor is not one flat surface. It is divided into five distinct basins. These are the Yucatan, Cayman, Colombian, Venezuelan, and Grenada Basins. Underwater ridges and mountain ranges separate these basins. For example, the Cayman Ridge and the Nicaraguan Rise act as boundaries. The deepest parts of the sea are found in the Cayman Trough. This trough sits between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The sea also contains two oceanic trenches. These are the Cayman Trench and the Puerto Rico Trench.
Tectonic activity makes this region very dynamic. The South American Plate pushes against the Caribbean Plate. This pressure creates island arcs and volcanic activity. Some volcanoes in the Lesser Antilles are active. Examples include Mount Pelee and La Soufrière. This movement also causes frequent earthquakes. In the last 500 years, the area has had twelve earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.5 or higher. A major 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti in 2010. These underwater movements can also generate dangerous tsunamis.
Human history in the Caribbean is deeply tied to its waters. The name "Caribbean" comes from the Caribs. They were a dominant group of native people during European contact. In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed into these waters.

One of the most vital features is the coral reef system. The Caribbean holds about 9% of the world's coral reefs. 

Environmental changes pose a threat to these ecosystems. Tiny plants called zooxanthellae live inside coral tissues. These plants provide food and color to the coral. When the water becomes too warm, these plants die off. This process is called coral bleaching. It can devastate entire reef systems. Currently, many corals are experiencing whitening. To help, 15 countries have joined a convention to protect the marine environment. This effort aims to stop human activities that destroy these fragile habitats.
