Subduction processes create impressive volcanic chains. The Lesser Antilles Volcanic Arc is formed by this subduction. It stretches from the Virgin Islands down to the Venezuelan coast. Instead, it overrode the ocean floor and moved east. It lost its Pacific connection when the Isthmus of Panama formed 3 million years ago.

A newer theory offers a different perspective. This theory suggests the plate originated from an Atlantic hotspot that no longer exists. This idea is based on the absolute motion of the plate. This motion indicates the plate actually moves westward. Its apparent eastward motion is only relative to the North American and South American plates.

The movement of the plate has had a massive impact on life. During the Late Cretaceous, the plate began migrating eastward. This created a volcanic arc from South America to the Yucatán Peninsula. This arc intermittently formed a land bridge. In the Late Paleocene, a low sea level and continental uplift created a land bridge. This allowed certain mammals to move between continents. A later, more dramatic event was the Great American Interchange. This occurred as land and freshwater animals migrated via Central America. This event peaked around 2.6 million years ago during the Piacenzian age.
