Many people imagine these dogs following the hunter Orion through the night sky. The Milky Way also passes right through this constellation. You can even find several star clusters inside its borders, such as M41. It is a large part of the sky, covering 380 square degrees.

People have looked at these stars for a very long time. In ancient Mesopotamia, people saw Sirius as an arrow. They saw the other stars as a bow. The Greeks later changed this to a dog. They thought the stars showed a fast dog named Laelaps. In China, the stars were part of the Vermilion Bird. Sirius was called the Celestial Wolf there. Different cultures saw many different stories in the same stars. The Māori people saw a group called the Assembly of Sirius.

There are many amazing numbers found in Canis Major. The star Wezen is a yellow-white supergiant. It is 17 times more massive than our Sun. If it were in our solar system, it would reach Earth!

Another star, Aludra, is 176,000 times as bright as the Sun. Some stars in this group are very different in size. The star VY CMa is one of the largest stars known. However, the neutron star RX J0720.4-3125 is tiny. It has a radius of only 5 km.

Looking at Canis Major helps us understand how stars live. Stars like Wezen change as they get older. Wezen has stopped fusing hydrogen in its core. Soon, it will become a red supergiant. Eventually, it might explode as a supernova.

Other stars, like Mirzam, act as announcers. Mirzam rises just a few minutes before Sirius does. This helps people find the brightest star in the sky. The stars are always moving and changing in many ways.

The constellation is bordered by Monoceros to the north, Puppis to the east and southeast, Columba to the southwest, and Lepus to the west. It is officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union with the three-letter abbreviation "CMa."

The constellation is famous because it contains some of the most remarkable stars in our galaxy. The most notable is Sirius, also known as the "dog star." Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky due to its high intrinsic brightness and its close proximity to our Solar System.

It is located only 8.6 light-years away. Sirius is actually a binary star system, meaning two stars orbit one another. The main star, Sirius A, is paired with a white dwarf called Sirius B. These two stars complete an orbit every 50 years.

Other stars in Canis Major show incredible variety in brightness and type. Adhara, or Epsilon Canis Majoris, is the second-brightest star in the constellation. It is a blue-white supergiant and a major source of extreme ultraviolet radiation.

Another bright star is the yellow-white supergiant Wezen, or Delta Canis Majoris. Wezen is 17 times more massive than the Sun and 50,000 times more luminous. If Wezen were placed at the center of our Solar System, its diameter would reach all the way to Earth. The blue-white giant Beta Canis Majoris, named Mirzam, is also highly visible. It is a variable star, meaning its brightness changes slightly over a six-hour period.

History shows that different cultures have interpreted these stars in many ways. In ancient Mesopotamia, around 1100 BC, Sirius was seen as an arrow (KAK.SI.SA2) aimed at Orion. The surrounding stars were viewed as a bow named BAN. The Greeks later reimagined these stars as a dog, such as the legendary Laelaps. In Chinese astronomy, these stars were part of the Vermilion Bird asterism. There, Sirius was known as Tiānláng, the "Celestial Wolf."

Māori people recognized the stars as Te Huinga-o-Rehua, an assembly that included both Canis Major and Canis Minor.

The stars in Canis Major also provide a window into the life cycles of stars. For example, Wezen has already stopped fusing hydrogen in its core. Because of this, its outer envelope is beginning to expand and cool. In about 100,000 years, it will transform into a red supergiant. Eventually, once its core contains iron, it will collapse and explode as a supernova.

Other stars, like the red supergiant Sigma Canis Majoris, also show irregular changes in brightness. These processes help astronomers understand how massive stars age and eventually die.

The scale of objects within Canis Major is truly extreme. The constellation contains the red hypergiant VY CMa, which is one of the largest known stars.

In total contrast, the constellation also hosts the neutron star RX J0720.4-3125. While VY CMa is massive, this neutron star is incredibly compact, with a radius of only 5 km. This range from the massive to the tiny highlights the diversity of stellar objects found in this region of space.

Canis Major connects to many different fields of study, from mythology to advanced physics. Astronomers use its bright stars to study stellar evolution and the movement of the Milky Way, which passes through the constellation.
