It was consecrated in 656 AD by Saint Fructuosus.

Braga has a long history of different rulers. Long ago, the region was home to the Bracari peoples. They lived in fortified settlements called castra.

The Romans conquered the area around 136 BC. They founded the city of Bracara Augusta in 16 BC. This city was the capital of the Roman province of Gallaecia. In the 5th century, the Suebi people arrived. They were a Germanic group from Central Europe. They established a kingdom in 410 AD. Bracara was the capital of this Suebi kingdom.

Conflict and change shaped the city through the Middle Ages. The Visigoths took control from the Suebi around 584 AD. They made Braga a provincial capital. Later, the Moors captured the city briefly between 714 and 716 AD. Christian forces under Alfonso I of Asturias repelled them in 741 AD. The Moors were not definitively ousted until 868 AD. The bishopric was restored in 1070 AD. The first new archbishop was Peter of Braga. He began rebuilding the Sé Cathedral.

The city's appearance changed through several major architectural eras. In the 16th century, Archbishop Diogo de Sousa modernized the town. He enlarged streets and created public squares. He also added a Manueline style chapel to the cathedral. The Manueline style is a Portuguese architectural style. In the 18th century, the city saw a Baroque transformation. The Baroque style is known for being grand and ornate. Architects like André Soares and Carlos Amarante worked on this. They updated the municipal hall and many urban palaces.

Braga has also been a center of political power. Between 1093 and 1147, it was the seat of the Portuguese court. The city helped Portugal become an independent kingdom. Archbishop D. Paio Mendes intervened with Pope Alexander III. This led to the Bula Manifestis Probatum in 1179. This document recognized Portugal as an independent kingdom. Because of this, the king gave the city many privileges. The city was even called the "Paiz Bracarense," or Country of Braga.
