Bobo-Dioulasso is a major urban center located in southwestern Burkina Faso. It sits within the Houet Province, approximately 350 km from the national capital, Ouagadougou.
The city's origins trace back to the 15th century when it was founded as Sia. Originally, the settlement was populated by the Oule and Dioula subgroups of the Bobo people. During this era, Sia functioned as a critical market center. It was particularly important for the export of horses to southern regions. This activity made the city a key link in trade routes. These routes connected the Inner Niger Delta and Djenne to Kong, Begho, and the Gold Coast.
Political shifts changed the region's leadership in the 18th century. In 1710, Seku Watara established the Kong Empire. His relatives, including Famagan, Kere-Mori, and Bamba Watara, later played roles in conquering Sia. They subjugated the native Bobo-Dioula and Bobo-Oule populations in the late 1730s. Following Seku's death, descendants of Famagan ruled the area known as Gwiriko. This region maintained near-autonomy from the senior Kong branch. By the late 19th century, the city consisted of two large villages named Tunuma and Sia. These villages were separated by ravines carved by the We River and its tributary, the Sanyo.
The colonial period brought significant structural changes to the city. In 1897, French forces occupied Sia following a brief confrontation. They eventually established a military post and an administrative settlement on the east side of the We River. This settlement became the headquarters for the district of Bobo-Dioulasso. Between 1926 and 1929, the French colonial government constructed a modern city center. They used a European grid pattern with avenues and diagonal streets. In 1927, the French razed the old village of Tunuma. The population was relocated to new areas, such as the current Tounouma neighborhood. The arrival of the Abidjan Railway in 1934 further increased the city's connectivity.
Economically, Bobo-Dioulasso has played a dual role in Burkina Faso's history. After the nation gained independence in 1960, it was often called the "economic capital." This distinguished it from Ouagadougou, which serves as the administrative capital. The city sits at the heart of a productive agricultural zone. It produces essential food grains and various fruits like mangoes and citrus. It also processes export crops such as cotton, cashews, and shea butter.
The city's architecture and landmarks reflect its diverse heritage. The Grand Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso is a notable example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture.

Modern Bobo-Dioulasso is a linguistically and ethnically diverse metropolis. The population grew from 904,920 in 2019 to 1,129,000 in 2023. Jula is the lingua franca used throughout the region. There are two distinct dialects of Jula spoken in the city. The common Jula is a variation of Bamana, brought by colonial-era soldiers and interpreters. Another dialect, called Kon-Jula, serves as an ethnic marker for specific communities. The climate is tropical with a wet and dry cycle. The dry season lasts from October through April, while the wet season covers the other five months.
