Later, a leader named Robert Reverdy helped the city grow. He served as the district chief from 1925 to 1927. Reverdy moved the chief town of the district to Moundou in 1927. He worked to organize the local chieftains. Reverdy also urbanized the post by planting flowers along the roads. These flowers bloomed from February to May. This practice earned the city the nickname "Moundou-la-Rouge."

Industrial development began shortly after the city's founding. In 1926, the Cotton Company of the Congo installed a ginning factory. This company later became Cotonfran in 1928. By 1972, it was renamed CotonTchad. The city also hosts the Gala Brewery. This facility is operated by Brasseries du Logone. It produces the most popular beer in Chad. The city also has a cigarette manufacturer called MCT.

Moundou is divided into four municipal districts. These districts contain 20 different neighborhoods. The first district includes neighborhoods like Dombao and Taye. The second district includes Nguelbe and Baguirmi. The third district includes Guelkoura and Mbague. The fourth district includes Mbombaya and Madana.
