Bikaner is a large and busy city in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

The history of the city began a long time ago. Before the mid-15th century, the land was a barren wilderness called Jangladesh. A Rajput chief named Rao Bika founded the city in 1488. The name Bikaner means "the city of Bika" in the local language. Bika wanted to build his own kingdom rather than inherit Jodhpur. He chose this area because it had spring water. This made the city an oasis on a trade path. This path connected Central Asia to the Gujarat coast.
Many powerful rulers helped build the city over the years. Raja Rai Singh built the Junagarh Fort around 1594. This fort is special because it sits on flat land. Most other major forts in Rajasthan are built on hills.

Nature and animals are also a big part of the region. Many birds live in the semi-arid climate around the city. There are about 600 resident vultures living at Jorbeer. Another 1,200 migratory vultures fly to the area each year.

Bikaner is also a very famous place for tasty food. The city is well known for a savory snack called Bikaneri bhujia. This snack has a special tag to show it is original. People also enjoy foods like Dal baati Churma and sweets like Gulab Jamun.
Bikaner is a significant city located in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It sits in the Thar Desert region of western Rajasthan. The city is positioned northwest of Jaipur, which is the state capital. Bikaner serves as the administrative headquarters for both the Bikaner District and the Bikaner division. It has grown from small origins to become the fourth largest city in Rajasthan. The city is a vital hub within its semi-arid environment.
The development of Bikaner was heavily influenced by water access. Before the city was established, the region was a barren wilderness called Jangladesh. Rao Bika, a Rajput chief of the Rathore dynasty, founded the city in 1488 CE. He was the first son of Maharaja Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur. Bika chose this area to establish his own kingdom rather than inheriting Jodhpur. Although located in the Thar Desert, Bikaner functioned as an oasis. It sat on a trade route between Central Asia and the Gujarat coast. This was possible because the area had adequate spring water.
Over many centuries, several rulers contributed to the city's architecture. Raja Rai Singh ruled from 1571 to 1611 and helped the state flourish. He was a high-ranking army general under the Mughal Emperors Akbar and Jahangir. Rai Singh built the Junagarh Fort, originally called Chintamani, around 1594 CE. This fort is unique because it was not built on hilly terrain. Instead, it sits on a plain with an average elevation of 370 meters.
Maharaja Ganga Singh was one of the most influential rulers in Bikaner's history. He reigned from 1887 to 1943 and was a favorite of the British Viceroys. He represented India at the Versailles Peace Conference following the First World War. Ganga Singh contributed significantly to the Junagarh Fort by building the Ganga Mahal. He also built the Ganga Niwas Palace with towers at the entrance patio. In 1902, he built the Lalgarh Palace to honor his father. This palace was designed by the British architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob in the Indo-Saracenic style.

The climate in Bikaner is classified as a hot desert climate. It experiences extreme temperature variations throughout the year. In the summer, temperatures can exceed 45 degrees Celsius. During the winter, temperatures may drop below freezing. Annual rainfall is very low, averaging only about 168 millimeters. Most rain occurs during the monsoon season from June to September. The rainfall is highly variable and occurs for fewer than thirty hours each year.
Bikaner's environment supports various types of wildlife. The semi-arid climate is home to many birds, mammals, and reptiles. There are approximately 600 resident vultures at Jorbeer. Additionally, about 1,200 migratory vultures visit the region. These include the Egyptian and King Vultures. Migratory species like the Eurasian Griffon travel from Spain and Turkey. The Cinereous and Himalayan Griffons are also found here. The saw-scaled viper is a native reptile of the area. The Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is located 32 km west of the city.
The city is also a major center for culture and food. Bikaner is famous for Bikaneri bhujia, a savory snack with a Geographical Indication tag. Other notable foods include Dal baati Churma and sweets like Rasgulla and Gulab Jamun. The multinational company Haldiram's was founded by Ganga Bishan Agarwal from Bikaner. The city's population was approximately 644,406, making it one of the top 70 largest cities in India. Most residents speak Rajasthani or Hindi. The Karni Mata Temple, located 30 km south, is a famous pilgrimage site. It is dedicated to the goddess Karni Mata and is known for the kaabas that live there.
