This makes it the second most populous area in its region, following Dijon.

The geography of Besançon is defined by a unique natural feature called an oxbow. This is a large, U-shaped meander formed by the Doubs River. The river loops around the city, creating a natural boundary. A single hill, Mont Saint-Étienne, closes the fourth side of this loop.

This hill reaches a maximum height of 385 meters. The city's center sits on a flat area at about 280 meters of elevation. A barge canal even cuts through the rock under Mont Saint-Étienne to create a shortcut. Surrounding the central loop are six other hills. These include Brégille, Griffon, Planoise, Chaudanne, Montfaucon, and Montboucon. These elevations range from 300 to 450 meters.

Besançon has functioned as a strategic military stronghold for many centuries. Its position within the river loop provided excellent natural defenses. This importance began during the Gallo-Roman era when it was known as Vesontio. The Sequani tribe established an oppidum, which is a fortified town, to protect their interests. Julius Caesar recorded the town in his writings, noting it was surrounded by a wooden palisade. The city's location near the Alps also made it a significant barrier and gateway. Over time, the name evolved from Vesontio to Besontio and eventually to Besançon by 1243. The local people, known as Bisontins, still honor this long heritage.

The city's defensive architecture reached a peak through the work of Vauban. Vauban was a famous military engineer who designed many fortifications for France. In the late 1600s, he worked on the city's defenses for about 30 years. He designed the massive Citadel, which sits atop Mont Saint-Étienne.

This structure features two dry moats with inner and outer courts. The Spanish had previously built the main center of the defenses there. Vauban also helped design walls that surround the entire city. Numerous forts, such as Fort de Trois Châtels and Fort Griffon, sit on the surrounding hills. Because of this remarkable engineering, the fortifications were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

Political control of Besançon has shifted many times throughout history. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was designated a Free Imperial City, meaning it was an autonomous city-state. In the 15th century, the city fell under the influence of the Dukes of Burgundy. It later became a Habsburg fief through royal marriage. For a period, the city even had the right to mint its own coins. Control eventually passed to France following the actions of Louis XIV. The city has seen various occupations, including during the Napoleonic era and World War II. During the German occupation, the Citadel was used by the Nazis, and many resistance fighters were executed there.

Beyond its military history, Besançon is a center for industry and education. The city is historically recognized as the watchmaking capital of France. This legacy has transitioned into modern high-tech sectors. Today, the region is a hub for microtechnology, micromechanics, and biomedical engineering. The University of Besançon, founded in 1423, is a major intellectual center. It has nearly 30,000 students enrolled. This includes about 4,000 trainees studying at the Centre for Applied Linguistics, or CLA. This international presence makes the city a diverse and active academic environment.

Besançon is also celebrated for its high quality of life and environmental features. It is recognized as the greenest city in France when measuring green space per inhabitant. The climate is oceanic, meaning it has cool winters and warm summers. It receives about 800 millimeters of precipitation every year. The city has been labeled a "Town of Art and History" since 1986.
