Constructing this spaceport was one of the most expensive infrastructure projects for the Soviet Union. The site was chosen for several specific scientific and logistical reasons. The area needed wide, flat plains to accommodate radio control systems. These systems required uninterrupted signals from ground stations hundreds of kilometers away. The trajectory of the missiles also had to avoid populated areas for safety. Additionally, being closer to the equator is helpful for space launches. This is because the Earth has a higher rotational speed near the equator.

The history of the site began in the mid-1950s. On February 12, 1955, the Soviet Ministry of Defense issued a decree to found the site. It officially opened on June 2, 1955, as Scientific Research Test Range No. 5. It was originally a test center for the R-7 Semyorka, the world's first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). A commission led by General Vasily Voznyuk selected the location. Sergey Korolyov, the Chief Designer of the R-7, also influenced the choice. To support the workers, a town called Leninsk was built near the facility.

Baikonur has been the stage for many historic milestones in space exploration. In 1957, it launched Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite. In 1959, the Luna 1 spacecraft traveled close to the Moon from this site. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in outer space. He launched from a pad that was later named "Gagarin's Start" in his honor. The site also launched Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, in 1963. For example, an R-16 missile exploded at Pad 41/3 in 1960, killing over 100 people. Another pad, 45/2, was destroyed in an explosion in 1990. The site is a complex network of specialized locations for different mission types.

Despite its successes, the cosmodrome has had a significant environmental impact. Some Russian rocket engines use a fuel called UDMH, which is highly toxic. Research by scientist Afanasiy Ilich Tobonov linked mass deaths of wildlife to rocket flight paths. In the 1990s, mass deaths of birds and livestock were noted in the Sakha Republic. Scientists also noted that scrap metal, totaling about 11,000 tons, lies on the ground. This metal is often polluted with toxic UDMH. This pollution has been linked to acid rain and health issues in local populations. In 1997, the Russian Ministry of Defense changed flight paths to help reduce these effects.

Today, the future of Baikonur is undergoing major changes. Russia is building the Vostochny Cosmodrome to reduce its reliance on the Kazakh site. The relationship between Russia and Kazakhstan has also become more complex. In 2023, the Kazakh government seized the Baiterek launch complex. This happened because Russia had a $29.7 million debt to Kazakhstan. Some parts of the cosmodrome may eventually be deactivated. Authorities have discussed turning the site into a museum for tourism. This would allow people to visit the historic locations where humanity first reached for the stars.
