He lived and worked from about 1317 until 1348. His brother, Pietro Lorenzetti, was also a painter. During this time, most artists did exactly what their bosses wanted. This made it hard for painters to show their own unique styles. However, Ambrogio was very original and different from others. He liked to study old art from Greece and Rome. He even studied an ancient statue found in Siena. Some people said he acted more like a philosopher than an artist.

Ambrogio used many new ways to make his art look real. He experimented with perspective, which is a way to show depth. This helps a flat painting look like a real space. In his painting called Annunciation from 1344, he used lines on a floor to create this depth.

He also studied how faces and bodies look to show emotion. In a fresco called Investiture of Saint Louis of Toulouse, he showed a very natural scene. The buildings in that work look like they have real three-dimensional space. He was very good at making people look like they were in a real place. This skill helped lead the way for the later Renaissance period.

One of his most famous jobs was painting large scenes on walls. These wall paintings are called frescoes. He painted these in a special room in Siena called the Sala dei Nove.

These works show the effects of good and bad government. One part shows a peaceful town and countryside. It is like a giant picture book of a medieval village. Another part shows a bad government and its bad effects. In one of these paintings, you can even see an early hourglass. These works were made for the leaders who ran the city.

Ambrogio also painted many beautiful pictures of the Virgin Mary. In his 1319 work, Madonna and Child, he used bright colors and patterns.

He followed some old Byzantine styles, like having the figures face forward. In another work called Maestà from 1335, he did something very new. He showed the Virgin Mary looking at her baby with deep love.

This made her seem like a real, human mother. This style was a bridge between old traditions and new ways of painting.

Ambrogio's life ended during a very difficult time in Europe. A sickness called the bubonic plague spread across many lands. He made his last will on August 9, 1348. It is believed he died from the plague that same year.

Even though his life was short, his art changed how people painted. Many artists who came after him looked at his work to learn. He showed that art could be both beautiful and full of real human feelings. His paintings still tell stories about life, cities, and people today.

Ambrogio Lorenzetti was a highly influential Italian painter of the Sienese school.

He was active from approximately 1317 until 1348. His work is celebrated for its exceptional originality during a period of transition in art history. Most artists of his time followed the specific wishes of their patrons. This patronage often prevented painters from developing individualistic styles. However, Lorenzetti broke these patterns by creating a unique and personal approach to painting. His innovations helped bridge the gap between the older Byzantine traditions and the later Renaissance period.

Lorenzetti used several advanced techniques to make his paintings feel more lifelike. He experimented with perspective, which is a method used to create the illusion of depth on a flat surface. In his 1344 painting, *Annunciation*, he used diagonal lines on a floor to suggest three-dimensional space.

He also studied physiognomy, which is the study of how facial features can show character or emotion. In the fresco *Investiture of Saint Louis of Toulouse*, he rendered architectural environments with a realistic sense of depth.

By positioning figures in natural ways, he introduced a new level of naturalism to Sienese art.

His body of work includes various types of religious and secular paintings. In his early work, *Madonna and Child* (1319), he utilized Byzantine elements like frontality. Frontality means the subject faces the viewer directly.

Instead of using chiaroscuro, which is a technique using light and shadow to show volume, he used color and patterns to move figures forward. In his 1335 painting, *Maestà*, he moved toward a more humanized style. He depicted the Virgin Mary with intense maternal emotion. This focus on human connection showed an increasing secularity, or focus on worldly life, in Sienese art.

One of Lorenzetti's most significant achievements was his series of frescoes in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. These were painted for the "nine," the group of leaders who governed the republic.

The series includes *The Allegory of Good and Bad Government*. These large wall paintings show the consequences of how a city is ruled. The *Effects of Good Government on Town and Country* acts as a pictorial encyclopedia of a peaceful medieval *borgo*, or village. Interestingly, the fresco *Allegory of Bad Government and Its Effects on Town and Country* contains the first known evidence of an hourglass.

Lorenzetti's career was shaped by his interest in classical antiquity. He studied ancient Greek and Roman art forms to improve his own work. The sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti noted that Lorenzetti was interested in an ancient statue found in Siena. This statue was attributed to the Greek sculptor Lysippus. His intellectual curiosity was so great that the writer Giorgio Vasari described him as having the manners of a gentleman and a philosopher. This deep study of the past allowed him to create works that were much more complex than the standard art of his era.

His work had a lasting impact on the history of European art. Many subsequent artists chose to emulate his innovative methods. He was a leading proponent of the transition from the formal Byzantine style to the more naturalistic Renaissance style. His ability to combine religious themes with human psychology and spatial depth set a new standard. Even his use of allegory, or using symbols to represent ideas, helped prepare the way for future generations of painters. His influence can be seen in the way artists began to treat the canvas as a window into a real, three-dimensional world.

Lorenzetti's life came to an end during a period of great hardship in Europe. A disease known as the bubonic plague was spreading across the continent.
