There are many theories about how the name Ajaccio began.

Ajaccio Cité1JPG.jpg
Ajaccio Cité1JPG.jpg
One prestigious theory suggests a Greek hero named Ajax founded the city. Other researchers suggest a more practical origin. They think the name might come from the Tuscan word "agghiacciu," which means sheep pens. Byzantine sources from around 600 AD refer to the city as Agiation. This suggests a possible Greek connection. However, some experts believe the Greek ending does not prove the ethnicity of the people. They note that geographers often used Greek or Latin forms interchangeably.

Archaeological evidence shows a long history of human life in Ajaccio.

In the 2nd century AD, the Mediterranean was a prosperous region. Recent underwater discoveries of Roman ships suggest the area had a working port. Excavations also found early Christian remains. These finds suggest the city was significant during Late Antiquity. In 591 AD, Pope Gregory the Great mentioned the city. He noted it was a seat of a diocese. In 2005, researchers found a 6th-century baptistry and many pieces of pottery. These items prove the existence of an early Christian town.

The city we see today was shaped by the Genoese in the late 1500s.

After the 8th century, the city had declined significantly. To assert dominance, the Genoese decided to rebuild it in 1492. They considered several locations for the new town. They rejected the Pointe de la Parata because it was too windy. They also rejected the ancient city because it was too close to salt ponds. Instead, they chose the Punta della Lechia. An architect named Cristoforo of Gandini began work there. He built a castle on Capo di Bolo to protect the new colony.

Napoleon Bonaparte is the most famous person associated with Ajaccio.

The city receives an average of 2,726 hours of sunshine every year. This makes it a very bright location. Summers are typically hot and dry. The nearby Mediterranean Sea helps to temper the heat. However, the sirocco wind can change this. Winters are generally mild, and snow is a rare event. Interestingly, Ajaccio holds a record for thunderstorms. Between 1971 and 2000, it averaged 39 thunderstorm days per year. In 2009, the city even experienced an F1 intensity tornado.

The total area of the commune is 82.03 square kilometers. However, only a small part of this land is urbanized. Most of the people live on a narrow coastal strip. This creates a densely populated arc in the east. The rest of the territory is mostly natural land. A demographic boom occurred in the 1960s. Because of this, 85% of the dwellings were built after 1949. This results in a mix of old and new. You will see large concrete towers alongside the historic old city.
