During the Neolithic era, around 7000 BC, people practiced small-scale agriculture and domesticated sheep and goats. A notable early industry was the exploitation of bitumen in Selenicë. This black, viscous substance was used as a pigment, a waterproof agent, and an adhesive.

By the Bronze Age, the area saw the arrival of Indo-European groups. These groups left behind burial mounds known as tumuli, which are still visible today.

In antiquity, the territory was inhabited by various Indo-European tribes, most notably the Illyrians. Several Illyrian tribes, such as the Ardiaei and the Taulantians, held significant power. The Taulantians even fought against Alexander the Great at the Battle of Pelium in 335 BC. Along the coast, Ancient Greeks established several colonies, including Apollonia and Epidamnos.

Following the Illyrian Wars, the region was integrated into the Roman Empire. After the Roman Empire was partitioned, Albania remained part of the Byzantine Empire. During the Middle Ages, several distinct Albanian principalities emerged, such as the Principality of Arbanon.

A major turning point occurred in the 15th century during the Ottoman expansion. Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg emerged as a central leader of resistance. He led military campaigns that successfully repelled Ottoman advances for more than two decades.

Although the region was eventually incorporated into the Ottoman Empire, Albanians maintained distinct identities. This cultural persistence eventually led to the Albanian Renaissance in the 19th century. Albania officially declared its independence in 1912.

The following 20th century was a turbulent period of political change.
