Ahn helped start a group to help other Koreans find jobs. This led to a settlement called Pachappa Camp. Some people call this place "Dosan's Republic."

Ahn spent many years working for Korean independence. He helped start the Korean National Association to support his people. He was even one of the men who wrote the lyrics for the South Korean national anthem. Because of his work, the Japanese government arrested him five times. He was often treated very unfairly for his beliefs. He finally passed away in 1938 after being sick for a long time. His wife, Helen, supported the movement by raising money for it.

Ahn's life began in a farming family in Pyeongan Province. He was born Ahn Chi-sam on November 9, 1878. His father was An Hŭng-kuk and his mother was Hwang Mong-un. He studied at a local school called a seodang. When he was 16, he wanted to improve Korea. He moved to Seoul for a Western-style education. He studied at Kusehaktang, a school run by missionaries. He also worked at Chejungwon, the first medical institution in Korea.

In 1902, Ahn and his wife Helen immigrated to the United States.

Ahn worked at Alta Cresta Groves. He helped establish the Korean Employment Bureau to assist other immigrants.

Ahn helped create many important organizations for Koreans. He founded the Korean Friendship Society in 1903. This group later became the Mutual Assistance Society in 1905. In 1909, it merged to become the Korean National Association. This group represented Korean-Americans until the end of World War II. He also co-founded the newspaper The United Korean. This paper was a predecessor to the Sinhan Minbo. The Sinhan Minbo provided news about Korea for many years.

His activism led to many struggles with the Japanese government. Ahn was a key member of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. He was also involved in the Shinminhoe organization. Because of his work, he was arrested five times. He was arrested in 1909 and again in 1932 in Shanghai. In 1932, he was extradited to Korea after a bombing incident. He was sentenced to five years in Daejeon prison. He died on March 10, 1938, after being very ill.

Ahn's legacy is seen in many places today.

A post office in Los Angeles is named the Dosan Ahn Chang Ho Station. The 10 and 110 freeway interchange in Los Angeles is named after him. In South Korea, a submarine is named the Dosan Ahn Changho-class. Even the third pattern in Taekwondo is called Dosan. His family also left a mark on history.
