The Ahmadnagar Sultanate was a medieval Muslim kingdom in the northwestern Deccan region.

It was located between the sultanates of Gujarat and Bijapur. The kingdom was ruled by the Nizam Shahi dynasty. This state played a vital role in the history of the Deccan. It was known for its military strength and its rich cultural achievements. The sultanate's existence shaped the political landscape of central India for many decades.

The creation of the sultanate began with Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I. He was the son of Malik Hasan Bahri. His family were the Kulkarnis of Pathri in Marathwada. Originally, Malik Ahmad served as a governor for the Bahmani Sultanate. He governed districts like Beed and areas near Daulatabad. On May 28, 1490, he declared independence from the Bahmani Sultanate. This act established the Nizam Shahi dynasty as a de facto independent power.

Establishing a new kingdom required building strong centers of power. Initially, the capital was the town of Junnar. This town featured a fort that was later renamed Shivneri. In 1494, the leaders began constructing a new capital city named Ahmadnagar.

The city was modeled after great Persianate cities. It was considered highly impressive in its time. The rulers also secured the massive Daulatabad fortress in 1499 to strengthen their control.

The history of the dynasty saw many shifts in leadership and religion. After Malik Ahmad died in 1510, his seven-year-old son Burhan Nizam Shah I took the throne. Under the influence of a Persian official, Burhan converted to Nizari Isma'ili Shi'a Islam. This religious shift became a defining characteristic of the dynasty. Later, Hussain Nizam Shah I became a central figure in regional politics. In 1565, he helped lead an alliance of four Deccan sultans.

This alliance met the Vijayanagara Empire at the Battle of Talikota. During this conflict, Hussain Nizam Shah I personally beheaded the Vijayanagara regent, Rama Raya.

Successive rulers faced both expansion and intense conflict with the Mughal Empire. Murtaza Nizam Shah I expanded the kingdom to its largest territorial size. In 1586, the sultanate successfully repelled a Mughal invasion led by Akbar. However, the later years were marked by internal strife and assassinations. A notable female leader, Chand Bibi, served as a regent. She successfully defended the sultanate against Mughal attacks.

Another key figure was the prime minister Malik Ambar. He helped maintain resistance even after the Mughals captured the capital. The sultanate finally ended in 1636 when the Mughal viceroy Aurangzeb annexed the territory.

Malik Ambar also implemented a sophisticated revenue system. He based his methods on systems used in Northern India. He classified lands as either good or bad based on their fertility. This allowed for more accurate assessments of average crop yields. He abolished the practice of revenue farming to improve stability. Initially, farmers paid two-fifths of their produce in kind. Later, they could pay in cash, which was about one-third of the yield. This system helped manage the kingdom's economy through changing crop conditions.

The Ahmadnagar Sultanate left a lasting legacy through art and architecture. They established the earliest Deccan school of painting. The rulers built grand palaces like the Farah Bakhsh Bagh.
