The Durrani Empire was a very large and powerful land. It is often called the Kingdom of Afghanistan. This empire was important because it helped shape the modern country of Afghanistan. At its peak, it ruled many places in Central Asia. It also held parts of the Iranian plateau and the Indian subcontinent. It was one of the most significant Islamic empires of the late 1700s.

Ahmad Shah Durrani was the founder of this great dynasty. He was the son of Muhammad Zaman Khan. His father had been a governor in Herat. Ahmad was also a commander for Nader Shah Afshar. After Nader Shah died in June 1747, Ahmad became the leader. He led many armies to expand his borders. He even invaded India eight different times. In 1757, his forces reached the city of Delhi. He let the Mughal emperor stay in charge if he followed Afghan rules.

The empire also reached out to far away places like China. In 1763, Ahmad sent an embassy to the Qing dynasty. A man named Khwaja Mirhan led this group. They traveled a very long path to reach Beijing. They brought gifts like four horses for the Qing emperor. This meeting was important for how different empires saw each other.

Timur moved the capital city to Kabul. Peshawar became the capital during the winter months. Over time, the empire began to lose its land. The Sikh Empire took some areas in the early 1800s. Later, a new group called the Barakzai dynasty took over. Even so, people still call Ahmad the Father of the Nation. His work created the foundation for the nation we know today.

The Durrani Empire was a powerful state in the 18th century. It is often called the Afghan Empire or the Sadozai Kingdom. This empire was a major Islamic power in its time. It was second only to the Ottoman Empire in importance. The empire covered vast territories in Central Asia and the Iranian plateau. It also controlled parts of the Indian subcontinent. Today, historians view it as the foundation of the modern nation-state of Afghanistan.

The empire began with a major political shift in 1747. Before this, the region was part of the Persian Afsharid dynasty. Following the death of Nader Shah Afshar in June 1747, a grand council called a loya jirga met. This council lasted for nine days near the city of Kandahar. Two main leaders competed for the position of king. One was Hajji Jamal Khan of the Mohammadzai lineage. The other was Ahmad Khan of the Sadozai lineage. A holy man named Mohammad Sabir Khan intervened during the meeting. He placed sheaves of wheat or barley in Ahmad's turban. This act crowned him Pādshah, which means king. The title Durr-i-Durrān means "Pearl of the Pearls."

He was the son of Muhammad Zaman Khan, an Afghan chieftain. Ahmad had previously served as a commander under Nader Shah Afshar. To solidify his new identity, he changed his tribal name from Abdali to Durrani. He quickly moved to secure key cities. He captured Kandahar, Ghazni, Kabul, and Peshawar. In 1749, the Mughal Empire ceded control of much of northwestern India to him. This included the Sindh and Punjab regions. Ahmad also moved westward to take Mashhad from the Afsharid dynasty. He eventually brought many different tribes under his control. These included the Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, and Turkmen tribes.

During his reign, Ahmad Shah conducted many military campaigns. He invaded India on eight separate occasions. These campaigns allowed him to control parts of Kashmir and the majority of Punjab. In early 1757, his forces sacked the city of Delhi. However, he did not take full control of the city. He allowed the Mughal emperor, Alamgir II, to remain in power. This was allowed only if the emperor recognized Afghan authority. This authority covered the lands from the Indus River to the Sutlej River. Ahmad Shah's influence reached far beyond local borders. He sought to establish himself as a major world emperor.

In 1763, Ahmad Shah sent an embassy to the Qing dynasty in China.

This was a significant diplomatic move. The chief envoy was a man named Khwaja Mirhan. He traveled a long route to reach Beijing. The embassy brought gifts, including four horses. These horses were even painted by a Qing court painter. During the visit, a tense moment occurred when Mirhan refused to kowtow. Kowtowing is a traditional way of showing respect to the Chinese emperor. The refusal suggested that Ahmad Shah viewed himself as an equal to the Qing emperor. This incident caused the Qing emperor, Qianlong, to cut ties with the Afghans.

The relationship between the two empires remained complicated. The Qing emperor later refused to help the ruler of Badakhshan, Sultan Shah. Sultan Shah had asked for help against Afghan invasions. The Qing emperor believed that military intervention would be irrational. He decided to treat the Afghans as a rival power rather than a subordinate state. By 1769, the Afghans had occupied Badakhshan. This showed the strength of the Durrani military influence in the region. The interaction between these two massive powers shaped the politics of Central Asia.

After Ahmad Shah died in 1772, his son Timur Shah Durrani took the throne.

Timur Shah made some important changes to the empire. He moved the capital city to Kabul. He also designated Peshawar as the winter capital. However, the empire began to face challenges during this period. By the early 19th century, the empire began to lose its territory. The Sikh Empire took control of Peshawar, Multan, and Kashmir. Eventually, the Barakzai dynasty replaced the Durrani dynasty in Kabul. This led to the creation of the Emirate of Afghanistan. Despite these changes, Ahmad Shah is still honored as the Father of the Nation.
