There is also the Sudan buffalo and the Nile buffalo. One more is the mountain buffalo from the Virunga Mountains. These different types live in different homes across the continent.

They are closely related to Asian buffalo species rather than domestic cattle. Because of their unpredictable temperament, they have never been domesticated.

The physical structure of the African buffalo is built for strength. They have long, stocky bodies and short, thickset legs. Their front hooves are wider than their rear hooves. This design helps support their heavy front end. Adult males possess a characteristic feature in their horns. The bases of the horns fuse together to form a continuous bone shield. Scientists recognize five distinct subspecies of the African buffalo. The Cape buffalo (*S. c. caffer*) is the largest and is found in Southern and East Africa. The forest buffalo (*S. c. nanus*) is the smallest subspecies. It lives in the forests of Central and West Africa and is about the size of a zebra. The Sudan buffalo (*S. c. brachyceros*) is an intermediate version found in drier northern areas. The Nile buffalo (*S. c. aequinoctialis*) is similar to the Cape buffalo but is slightly smaller. The size differences between these subspecies are quite dramatic. A large Cape buffalo male can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms. In contrast, the forest buffalo is much lighter, averaging about 250 kilograms. This means the Cape buffalo can be four times heavier than its forest relative. The forest buffalo is also 30% to 40% smaller in overall body size. These physical variations allow the different subspecies to thrive in their specific habitats.

In the wild, African buffaloes must defend themselves against many predators. Lions are a primary threat and often hunt them in prides. It frequently takes several lions to bring down a single adult. Other predators include spotted hyenas, African wild dogs, and Nile crocodiles. While crocodiles usually target calves or old animals, large males can kill healthy adults. Even large animals like elephants can be a danger. Adolescent bull elephants may harass or kill buffalo calves during periods of aggression.

Buffaloes also face biological challenges like disease and genetic isolation. They can contract diseases such as bovine tuberculosis and foot-and-mouth disease. Because these diseases can be spread to domestic cattle, the movement of buffaloes is often restricted. Managing healthy, disease-free herds is very important. Some disease-free buffaloes from South Africa have been sold to breeders for nearly US$130,000. Genetically, they are distinct from other bovids. They have 52 chromosomes, while domestic cattle and American bison have 60. This difference prevents them from producing hybrid offspring with domestic cattle.
