The 14th Dalai Lama is a very important spiritual leader.

Finding the new leader is a very special way of working.
His life began in a small village called Taktser.
History changed things for him when he was a teenager. In 1950, he took on political duties at age 15. However, things became difficult in Tibet during 1959. He had to leave his home and escape to India. He first stayed in Mussoorie for a short time. In May 1960, he moved to Dharamshala. This is where he still lives today. He retired from being a political leader in 2011. He wanted a democratic government to lead the people instead.
Today, the Dalai Lama is known for his message of peace.
The 14th Dalai Lama is the highest spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

The process of finding a new Dalai Lama involves a complex search for a reincarnated soul. When a leader passes away, search teams look for a child who is the successor, or tulku. Following visions and signs, teams were sent to different directions to find the new incarnation. One team used a vision from the sacred lake of Lhamo La-tso. This vision described a monastery with a gilded roof and turquoise tiles. It also mentioned a specific path and a small house with distinctive eaves. These signs led searchers to the village of Taktser in the Amdo region.
Once a candidate is found, they must undergo specific tests to confirm their identity. In the case of the 14th Dalai Lama, the boy was born Lhamo Thondup. When he was two years old, searchers visited his home. They posed as pilgrims to observe him. One monk held a mala, a string of prayer beads, that belonged to the 13th Dalai Lama. The young boy correctly identified the monk's rank and asked for the beads. Later, he was shown pairs of objects. He correctly chose the items that had belonged to his predecessor in every instance. These successes helped confirm he was the 14th Dalai Lama.
Lhamo Thondup was born on 6 July 1935 to a farming and horse-trading family.
Political changes in Tibet significantly altered his life and responsibilities. Following the Battle of Chamdo, the People's Republic of China annexed Central Tibet. On 17 November 1950, the Tibetan government, known as the Ganden Phodrang, gave the 15-year-old Dalai Lama temporal duties. This means he held both spiritual and political power. However, during the 1959 Tibetan uprising, he had to flee his country. He escaped to India to seek safety. He first stayed in Mussoorie. In May 1960, he moved to the hill station of Dharamshala. He has lived in Dharamshala ever since.
The Dalai Lama has spent much of his life advocating for the Tibetan people. In 2011, he retired from his role as political head. This allowed the Central Tibetan Administration to become a democratic government. Since the early 1970s, he has promoted the Middle Way Approach. This policy seeks a peaceful resolution with China. He aims for a middle ground where Tibetans can keep their culture and religion. At the same time, he acknowledges China's assertion of sovereignty. He believes dialogue and communication are the best tools to address the interests of both parties.
His influence extends far beyond the borders of Tibet. He has traveled the world to teach Tibetan Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. His Kalachakra teachings are major international events.
