Why does the sea rise and fall?

Tidal forcing depends on differences in gravitational acceleration across Earth, rather than a uniform pull on one ocean patch. A smooth-ocean equilibrium picture helps connect Earth’s rotation with an observer’s changing water level. Adding solar and lunar contributions explains the spring–neap variation: larger ranges near new and full Moon, smaller ranges near the quarters. Tidal range means the high-to-low height difference. Its monthly modulation is distinct from the repeating daily cycle. Real oceans respond as waves shaped by depth, basin geometry, continents and dissipation, so their timing and relative heights need not match the simplified bulges. Read the water-level display as a relative teaching model; it supplies neither a local tidal datum nor a forecast.

Word help
tidal range

The difference in water height between a high tide and a low tide; not the number of tides.

quarter Moon

A phase when half the visible Moon looks lit; the Sun and Moon lie roughly at right angles as seen from Earth.

spring tide

A larger high-to-low range near new and full Moon, unrelated to the spring season.

neap tide

A smaller high-to-low range near the quarter Moon phases; tides still occur.

Idealised daily tide cycle and spring–neap range comparison. Water deformation, sizes and distances are exaggerated; the gauge shows relative levels, not a local tide prediction.

What to look for
  • Follow the same shore marker as Earth turns, and match its position to the water-level display.
  • Count the repeating rises and falls separately from the size of the high-to-low gap.
  • Compare aligned new/full Moon positions with right-angle quarter phases.
  • Notice that a smaller neap range still includes rising and falling water.
Explain what you noticed

Two imagined shore records each show two high tides and two low tides. In record B, the highs are higher and the lows are lower than in record A. What changed?

Keep this idea: Earth’s rotation helps produce the daily tide cycle; changing Sun–Moon geometry changes its range.
