Joint structure supports different degrees of movement. A hinge mainly permits flexion and extension in one plane. A ball-and-socket joint permits motion in multiple planes and rotation. Ligaments, muscles and other tissues stabilise these connections. Not every joint is freely movable, and the simplified diagram does not represent an individual’s range.

Illustrative joint geometry and angles. Real joint movement also depends on surrounding ligaments, muscles and other tissues.
What to look for
- Try the same direction with each joint.
- Watch the permitted plane of movement.
Explain what you noticed
A hip can move a thigh in several directions. Which model best explains that connection?
Keep this idea: Joint structure permits some movements and constrains others.
