Which materials complete an electrical path?

Reading level 4 of 5 · FluentChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

Conductivity describes how readily a material carries current, while the resistance of an object also depends on its geometry. The activity uses broad qualitative categories instead of invented precise resistance values for every sample. Graphite illustrates that some nonmetals conduct. Material identity is better evidence than surface colour, appearance or an object's everyday name.

Word help
conductor

A material that allows charge to move relatively easily.

insulator

A material that strongly resists charge movement under the comparison conditions.

Qualitative virtual sample comparison at fixed geometry; no household electrical testing.

What to look for
  • Graphite is a conducting nonmetal
  • Dry plastic resists current
  • Appearance alone is not the test
Explain what you noticed

A wire has a copper core inside a dry-plastic jacket. Which part provides the main conducting path?
