Many animals live near the water. Loggerhead sea turtles nest in the Bay of Laganas.
Visitors love to see the blue caves. These are carved into the cliffs. You can only reach them by boat. Another famous spot is Navagio beach. It is a cove on the northwest shore. The island has a mild Mediterranean climate. This means the summers are hot and sunny. The winters are mild and bring plenty of rain. This rain helps many green plants grow well. People here grow olives, grapes, and citrus fruit. One special plant is the Zante currant. This is a small, sweet, seedless grape.
Zakynthos has a very long and busy history. Ancient poets like Homer wrote about the island in his stories. Long ago, the island was even called Hyrie. It was part of many different groups over the years. The Venetians ruled the island from 1484 to 1797. They even gave it a nickname. They called it "Fioro di Levante," which means Flower of the East.
Many interesting things happen on the island due to its nature. The cliffs around Cape Skinari have blue caves carved into them. You can only visit these caves by using a small boat.
Life on the island has changed through many different events. In 1953, a huge earthquake hit the island. This event destroyed most of the buildings that were there. Since then, people have strengthened all the buildings to keep them safe.
Zakynthos, often called Zante, is a significant Greek island located in the Ionian Sea.

The island's geography creates distinct environments for both people and nature. The eastern side contains the wide and shallow Bay of Laganas, enclosed by the Vassilikos and Marathia peninsulas. This bay is a vital ecological site. It serves as the prime nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles, known scientifically as Caretta caretta.
Zakynthos has a deep history that stretches back to ancient times. The poet Homer mentioned the island in the Iliad and the Odyssey. He stated that the first inhabitants were led by Zakynthus, the son of King Dardanus of Arcadia. Before it was known as Zakynthos, the island was reportedly called Hyrie. During the ancient period, the island was involved in the Trojan War and was listed in the Homeric Catalogue of Ships. The island also played a role in the Peloponnesian War. In 430 BC, the Lacedaemonians attacked the island with 1,000 heavy infantry. Although they burned the countryside, the city itself refused to surrender and the attack failed.
One fascinating aspect of ancient history involves the island's natural resources. During the Peloponnesian War, Zakynthos was a valuable source of tar for the Athenian navy. Tar was more effective than pitch for protecting ship planking from rot, decay, and the teredo worm. This tar was dredged from the bottom of a lake, now known as Lake Keri. Workers used leafy myrtle branches tied to poles to collect it. The substance was then carried in pots to the beach or shipped to the naval yard at Piraeus. This resource helped maintain the Athenian trireme fleet, which required high-quality materials for shipbuilding.
Over many centuries, various powers controlled the island. The Venetians ruled Zakynthos from 1484 to 1797. They called the island "Fioro di Levante," meaning Flower of the East. After the Venetian Republic fell, the island passed through French and British hands. It was part of the United States of the Ionian Islands under British rule before joining Greece in 1864.
Modern history has also been shaped by significant challenges and acts of courage. In 1953, a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the island. This disaster destroyed most of the existing buildings. Since that time, all construction has been strengthened to withstand future tremors.
Today, Zakynthos is a major destination for travelers. Visitors often explore the famous Navagio beach, a cove isolated by high cliffs that is only accessible by boat.
