Yue is very important to the people who speak it. It helps them share their history and their culture.

There are many different ways to speak Yue. Linguists often use the name Cantonese for one group. This group includes the speech from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macau. This is often called the prestige variety. This means it is a very well-known version. Other varieties include Taishanese from the Jiangmen area. Taishanese was the main language for many migrants in the 1800s. They moved to North America and Southeast Asia. Most later migrants used Cantonese instead.

Different Yue varieties are not always easy to understand together. They are not mutually intelligible with other Chinese languages either.

History shows how these languages grew over a long time. Long ago, the area was home to the Hundred Yue.

Large groups of Han Chinese moved south starting in 214 BC. They often traveled along the Xiang and Li rivers. They used the Lingqu Canal to help their journey. Later, waves of people arrived during the fall of the Tang dynasty. These people mixed with the local groups. This mixing helped create the Yue-speaking population we see today. The languages even have sounds influenced by Tai languages. This happened because Tai speakers lived in the area a long time ago.

Guangzhou has been a very important center for a long time. It sits in the middle of the Pearl River Delta. By the year 660, it was the largest port in China. It was even part of a trade network reaching Arabia. This trade helped the language spread and grow. In 1715, the British East India Company set up a chamber of commerce there. This brought more people and new ideas to the region. Today, many Yue speakers live in Guangdong. About 60% of all Yue speakers live there.

Another 28.3% live in Guangxi, and 11.6% live in Hong Kong.

Languages often borrow words from each other through trade and travel. Cantonese has many words from English. For example, the word for bus is "baa1 si6." They also use words for taxi, cheese, and sandwich. In Hong Kong, people even mix English into their sentences. This creates a modern way of speaking. English has also borrowed words from Cantonese. People all over the world use the word "wok" for a cooking pot. They also use "dim sum" for small snacks. Other words include "wok," "char siu," and "wonton."

Yue is a major branch of Sinitic languages spoken in Southern China.

It is primarily found in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi. The term "Cantonese" is often used for the whole branch. However, linguists prefer using "Cantonese" only for the prestige variety. This specific variety is spoken in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macau. Yue languages are not mutually intelligible with each other. They are also distinct from other Chinese language branches. This means speakers of different Yue varieties cannot easily understand one another.

Linguistically, Yue is considered a conservative variety. It preserves many final consonants and tonal categories from Middle Chinese. These are ancient features of the language. However, Yue has lost some distinctions in initial consonants and medial glides. These are sounds that other Chinese varieties have kept. To avoid confusion, academic texts often use the name "Yue" to describe the entire group. This distinguishes the broad branch from the specific Guangzhou dialect.

The history of Yue is tied to the migration of people. Long ago, the Lingnan region was home to the Hundred Yue.

Large-scale Han Chinese migration began after the Qin conquest in 214 BC. People traveled through routes like the Xiang River. They used the Lingqu Canal to reach the Li River. Later, waves of immigrants arrived during the collapse of the Han, Tang, and Song dynasties. These groups mixed with the local Yue aborigines. This mixing created the modern Southern Han Chinese population. Even the colloquial speech contains influences from Tai languages. These were spoken by groups like the Zhuang and Dong.

Guangzhou has served as a vital economic center for centuries. It sits in the Pearl River Delta where several rivers converge. By the year 660, it was the largest port in China. It connected to trade networks as far away as Arabia. In 1715, the British East India Company established a chamber of commerce there. This boosted foreign trade and cultural exchange. As a result, the Guangzhou dialect spread widely. It became the basis for the Cantonese spoken in Hong Kong and Macau. Many Yue speakers also migrated to Southeast Asia and North America.

In the 19th century, Taishanese was the primary language for many migrants to North America.

Today, the distribution of Yue speakers is quite large. In Guangdong, Yue speakers make up about 47% of the population. In Guangxi, Yue speakers account for 35% of the total population. According to 2004 data, 60% of all Yue speakers live in Guangdong. Another 28.3% live in Guangxi, and 11.6% live in Hong Kong. The language is divided into several distinct groups. The Guangfu group includes Cantonese and is spoken by nearly half of all Yue speakers. The Ngau–Lau group makes up 17% of speakers. The Yuhng–Cham group accounts for about 7%. Other groups like Sze-yap, Gao–Yang, Wu–Hua, and Qin–Lian represent smaller percentages.

Languages constantly change through contact with others. Cantonese has absorbed many English loanwords through phonetic transliteration. For example, the word for bus is "baa1 si6." Other examples include "dik1 si6" for taxi and "si6 do1 be1 lei4" for strawberry. In Hong Kong, people often practice code-mixing. This means they insert English words directly into Cantonese grammar. Cantonese also shows influence from Japanese. This includes modern slang and "wasei-kango." These are Japanese-coined words using Chinese characters, such as "gaak3ming6" for revolution.

The influence of Yue is mutual and global. Many Cantonese words have entered the English language. People around the world use the word "wok" for a cooking pot. Other common English terms include "dim sum," "wonton," and "char siu." This exchange shows how language connects different cultures. The popularity of Hong Kong cinema and Cantopop music has also spread Cantonese globally. Even on the mainland, the language remains a significant part of local culture. It continues to be a vital way for people to express their identity.
