Yuan spent many years in Korea. He led Chinese troops there. He was a very good leader in battle. Later, he returned to China. He helped build a new kind of army. This was called the New Army. It was trained in a modern way.

In 1912, Yuan helped end the rule of the Qing dynasty. This was a long line of rulers.

He was born on September 16, 1859, into a wealthy family in Xiangcheng county. As a young man, Yuan studied hard to become a government official. He took the imperial examinations twice, in 1876 and 1879, but he did not pass. Because of this, he decided to join the army instead. He joined the Huai Army to find a way to serve his country. This choice changed the course of his entire life.

Much of Yuan's early career happened in Korea, which was known then as Joseon.

In 1882, he was sent there with the Huai Army to help keep things stable. He proved to be a very capable leader during the Gapsin Coup in 1884. He led his troops to defeat Japanese forces and helped recover King Gojong. For many years, Yuan acted as a powerful official in Korea. He worked to keep foreign influence out of the region. His time in Korea helped him build a strong reputation as a resourceful commander.

When Yuan returned to China, he focused on making the military much stronger.

After the First Sino-Japanese War, many people wanted a more modern army. In December 1895, Yuan was put in charge of the New Army. He trained these soldiers at a camp near Tianjin called Xiaozhan. This new force was very different from older armies in China. It was organized in a modern way and was very effective. This army eventually became his famous Beiyang Army.

In 1912, Yuan played a huge role in changing how China was ruled.

He helped end the long rule of the Qing dynasty. As a result, the last emperor, Puyi, had to step down. Yuan was then elected as the first formal president of the Republic of China. He led the Beiyang government during this new era. However, his time as president was filled with difficult political struggles. He even faced a revolution in 1913 led by Sun Yat-sen.

Toward the end of his life, Yuan made a choice that many people disliked. In December 1915, he declared himself the Hongxian Emperor. This move caused a conflict known as the National Protection War. Many people in China fought against his plan to bring back an empire. He could not keep the title for long. He gave up being emperor in March 1916 after only 83 days. Yuan died of kidney failure in June 1916 at the age of 56. His death left the government in a very weak state.

His leadership was tied to the Beiyang Army. This was a modern military force he helped create. His actions shaped the political landscape of China for many years.

Yuan was born on September 16, 1859. He grew up in an affluent Han family in Xiangcheng county.

His family was wealthy enough to provide a traditional Confucian education. Yuan originally wanted to work in the civil service. To do this, he had to pass the imperial examinations. However, he failed these difficult tests in 1876 and 1879. Because of these failures, he turned toward a military career. He joined the Huai Army to find a new way to serve.

Much of Yuan's early success happened in Korea, then known as Joseon. In 1882, he was sent there with the Huai Army. He helped restore stability during a period of internal struggle. During the Gapsin Coup in 1884, Yuan showed great leadership. He led his troops to defeat Japanese forces and recovered King Gojong.

For nine years, he served as a Chinese imperial resident in Korea. He worked to minimize foreign influence, especially from Japan and Russia. While he was successful in maintaining Chinese control, his rule was controversial. Many historians describe his time in Korea as a "dark age."

When Yuan returned to China, he focused on military modernization. After the First Sino-Japanese War, China needed a better military. In December 1895, Yuan was appointed commander of the New Army.

He organized this force at a camp in Xiaozhan near Tianjin. This training laid the foundation for his famous Beiyang Army. This army was different because it followed a modern, Western-style organization. It became the most effective and well-trained military force in China. This military power gave Yuan immense political influence.

Yuan played a decisive role in the end of the Qing dynasty. Following the Wuchang Uprising in 1911, the Qing court recalled him. He was appointed Prime Minister of the Imperial Cabinet. Yuan negotiated with revolutionaries led by Sun Yat-sen. He brokered a deal where Sun would step aside if Yuan secured the abdication of the Qing court.

As a result, the last emperor, Puyi, stepped down in 1912. Yuan then became the first formal president of the Republic of China.

However, Yuan's presidency was marked by intense political conflict. In 1913, he was linked to the assassination of Song Jiaoren. This event helped cause the Second Revolution led by Sun Yat-sen. Yuan's forces crushed this revolution decisively. He then took more control by outlawing the Kuomintang party. He also dissolved the National Assembly and changed the constitution.

These actions showed his desire for centralized, personal power over the new republic.

In December 1915, Yuan made a choice that shocked the nation. He declared himself the Hongxian Emperor.

This attempt to bring back a monarchy caused the National Protection War. Widespread opposition forced him to change his mind. In March 1916, he abdicated and restored the Republic. He had been emperor for only 83 days. His attempt to rule as an emperor failed very quickly.

Yuan Shikai died of kidney failure in June 1916. He was 56 years old.

His death left the Beiyang government in a weakened state. The political landscape of China became fragmented. This instability eventually led to a period known as warlordism. His life remains a central part of China's transition from an empire to a republic.
