His time in Boston ended in 1931 when his work papers expired. He then returned to Canada to settle in Ottawa and open his own studio.
In 1932, Karsh opened his first studio on Sparks Street in Ottawa. He achieved early success by photographing Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King. This connection helped him arrange sessions with many visiting dignitaries. His career reached an international turning point in 1941. 
Throughout his long career, Karsh captured a massive cross-section of history. He photographed 51 of the 100 most famous people of the 20th century. 
Karsh's life was also defined by his personal connections and his Canadian identity. He was one of the first 26 people to become a Canadian citizen in 1947. His first wife, Solange Gauthier, was a performer who managed his business. She was a central figure in his professional success. Later, he married Estrellita Maria Nachbar, a medical writer. Karsh retired in 1993 and moved to Boston. He died in 2002, leaving behind a legacy that remains visible in museums and on currency today.
