Yazd province is a major administrative region in the center of Iran. It is one of the 31 provinces that make up the country.
The landscape of Yazd is defined by its distinct mountain ranges and desert surroundings. One major group of mountains is located in the south and southwest. This range is wider than the other mountain ridges found in the province. It contains the Shir Kuh, which is the tallest mountain in the entire region. Another group, known as the Eastern Mountains, sits in the east. The highest point in these eastern mountains is a peak called Bon Lokht, which reaches an elevation of 3,002 meters.
The capital city is also named Yazd, and it has a very special location. The city is situated in a valley between the Shir Kuh and Kharaneq mountains. Because of this placement within the desert landscape, it is sometimes called "the bride of the Kavir."

Demographics in the province have changed steadily over the last two decades. In 2006, the National Census recorded 958,323 people living in 258,691 households. By 2011, the population grew to 1,074,428 people in 309,749 households. The 2016 census showed the population reached 1,138,533 people across 340,657 households. During this time, the administrative boundaries changed. Tabas County was separated from Yazd province to join South Khorasan province.
The population is highly urbanized, meaning most people live in cities. According to 2016 data, over 85% of the province's residents live in urban areas. This accounts for 971,355 people. The city of Yazd is the largest urban center with 529,673 residents. Other significant cities include Meybod, which had 80,712 people, and Ardakan, with 75,271 people.
Yazd province is divided into several administrative counties. These counties include Abarkuh, Ashkezar, Bafq, Khatam, Mehriz, and Meybod. Each county has its own specific population numbers that shift over time. For example, the population of Abarkuh grew from 42,610 in 2006 to 51,552 in 2016. The population of Ardakan also saw significant growth, rising from 66,900 in 2006 to 97,960 in 2016. These numbers show how different parts of the province develop at different rates.
The geography of the region connects the high mountains to the arid desert plains. This relationship between the peaks and the oasis creates a unique environment. The mountains provide a physical boundary for the valleys where cities like Yazd are built. Meanwhile, the surrounding Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut deserts define the outer limits of the province. This combination of high elevations and desert meeting points makes Yazd a significant geographical feature in central Iran.
