Dagon became a major pilgrimage pagoda town by the 14th century. During the Hanthawaddy kingdom, notable leaders ruled the town. Princess Maha Dewi ruled from 1364 to 1392. Her grandniece, Shin Saw Pu, became the only female queen regnant in Burmese history. Queen Saw Pu built a palace next to the Shwedagon Pagoda in 1460. In 1755, King Alaungpaya captured Dagon. He added new settlements and renamed the enlarged town Yangon. The name comes from Burmese words meaning "End of Strife."

The British era transformed the city into a major hub.

They captured Yangon during the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852. The British moved the capital of British Burma to Yangon from Moulmein. An army engineer named Lt. Alexander Fraser designed a new city. He used a grid plan on delta land. The city was bounded by Pazundaung Creek and the Yangon River. By the 1890s, the city had prosperous residential suburbs. These areas sat north of Royal Lake and Inya Lake.

The British also established hospitals and colleges. During this time, Yangon was known as "the garden city of the East."

Architecture is a defining feature of the urban landscape. Yangon has the highest number of colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia. The downtown core features a unique and intact colonial urban design. Many of these buildings are four-story structures. They often feature high ceilings and are used for both residential and commercial purposes. In 1996, the city created the Yangon City Heritage List. This list protects about 200 notable colonial-period buildings from being modified or torn down.

While many buildings are decaying, they remain highly sought after. They are among the most expensive properties in the city.

The city's political role changed significantly in the 20th and 21st centuries. Yangon was the center of the Burmese independence movement. Students at Rangoon University led several nationwide strikes against British rule. The city was under Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. It suffered heavy damage during World War II. Yangon became the capital of the Union of Burma in 1948. However, the military government moved the administrative capital to Naypyidaw in 2005. Despite this move, the city remains a center for political activity. It has seen major anti-government protests in 1974, 1988, 2007, and 2021.

Modern Yangon continues to expand and face new challenges. The city's area has grown steadily since 1901. It has spread north toward the Yangon International Airport.

This growth has created a long, stretching tail for the city. While some areas have modernized, many satellite towns lack basic infrastructure. Many residents still live without 24-hour electricity or regular garbage collection. The city's economy was also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 coup d'état. These events led to lockdowns and slowed the economy. Nevertheless, Yangon remains the most important economic and cultural heart of Myanmar.
