Writing is a way to show language using symbols.
People use symbols called a script. These symbols follow special rules. This is called orthography.
Some systems use sounds. These are called phonetic systems. An alphabet uses letters for sounds. Some alphabets use letters for vowels and consonants. Others use letters for only consonants. We call these abjads. Some use pairs of sounds. These are called abugidas. Syllabaries use symbols for whole syllables.
Other systems use meaning. These are called morphographic systems. A logogram is a symbol for a unit of meaning. Chinese characters are a major logographic system. They can use thousands of symbols. Alphabets usually use fewer than 100 symbols.
Writing started a long time ago. It grew from proto-writing. Proto-writing uses symbols to help memory. The Inca used knotted cords called quipu.
Writing was made in many places. It was not all from one group. Cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphs began around the same time. Chinese characters also grew on their own. The Latin alphabet is very common today. It came from the Greek alphabet.
A writing system is a way to show language using symbols. These symbols are called a script. They follow specific rules known as orthography. This includes things like spelling and how symbols are ordered. Writing is a visual and tactile way to record language.
There are different ways these symbols work. Some systems are phonetic, which means they represent sounds. Alphabets are a type of phonetic system. They use letters to represent sounds called phonemes. Some alphabets are pure and use letters for both consonants and vowels. Others are called abjads and only use consonant letters. There are also abugidas, which use letters for consonant-vowel pairs.
Other systems work by using meaning instead of sound. These are called morphographic systems. A logogram is a single symbol that represents a unit of meaning, like a word.
Writing was not invented just once. It was invented independently in several different places. It began as proto-writing, which used symbols to help memory.
Many of the scripts we use today have long histories. The alphabet used in many parts of the world comes from a Semitic language. This script was used in the Sinai Peninsula. It led to the Phoenician alphabet and then the Greek alphabet. The Latin alphabet is a descendant of the Greek one. Today, the Latin alphabet is the most common script in the world. Even though the symbols look different, they all help us share our thoughts.
A writing system is a conventional method for representing a language through a set of symbols. These symbols are collectively known as a script. A writing system also includes the specific rules that govern how those symbols are used. These rules are called orthography. Orthography includes conventions like spelling and the ordering of symbols. Writing is a visual and tactile notation of language.
To understand how writing works, we must look at the grapheme. A grapheme is the basic functional unit of a writing system. It is the smallest significant element used to construct a text. Graphemes are similar to phonemes, which are the units of sound in spoken language. One grapheme can have several different visual forms. These different shapes are called allographs. For example, the letter "a" can be written in a double-storey or single-storey style.
Writing systems are generally classified by how their graphemes relate to language units. One major category is phonographic systems. These systems use graphemes to represent the sounds of a language. Alphabets are a common type of phonographic system. They use letters to represent spoken phonemes. Alphabets are divided into three specific subtypes. Pure alphabets use letters for both consonants and vowels. Abjads primarily use letters for consonant sounds. Abugidas use letters that represent consonant-vowel pairs.
Another way to categorize writing is through morphographic systems. These systems use graphemes to represent units of meaning, such as words or morphemes. A common term for this is logographic writing. In these systems, a logogram is a single character that stands for a specific unit of meaning. Chinese characters are the only major logographic system still in use today. Because each character represents a meaning, these systems require many symbols. A person may need to know thousands of characters to write fluently. In contrast, most alphabets are much smaller, typically using fewer than 100 distinct symbols.
Writing did not begin as a complete system. It emerged from stages known as proto-writing. Proto-writing uses ideographs or mnemonic symbols to communicate. However, proto-writing cannot fully encode the complexities of a language. Examples include the Jiahu symbols from Neolithic China or the Vinča symbols from Europe. The Inca Empire used a system of knotted cords called quipu as a mnemonic device.
True writing systems were invented independently in several locations. The earliest systems appeared during the late 4th millennium BC. Cuneiform was used to write the Sumerian language in Mesopotamia. Egyptian hieroglyphs also emerged during this same period, between 3400 and 3100 BC. It is believed these two systems were invented independently. Similarly, Chinese characters emerged on their own in the Yellow River valley. Mesoamerican scripts, like the Maya script, were also independent inventions. These different cultures developed distinct ways to represent sound and meaning.
Most modern alphabets share a common lineage. Alphabetic writing descends from morphographic systems. The first alphabets appeared to write a Semitic language in the Sinai Peninsula. This led to the Phoenician alphabet and later the Greek alphabet. The Latin alphabet descended from the Greek version. Today, the Latin alphabet is the most common script used globally.
