One of Pauli's most significant contributions was the Pauli exclusion principle. This principle is a fundamental rule that explains the structure of matter. It states that no two electrons can occupy the same quantum state simultaneously. A quantum state is a specific set of properties that describes a particle. To explain this, Pauli introduced a new quantum number representing electron spin. Spin is a fundamental property of particles, similar to how a top rotates. While the idea of spin was suggested by Ralph Kronig, George Uhlenbeck and Samuel Goudsmit identified it as the property Pauli had described. Pauli’s work on spin operators and the Pauli equation helped provide a mathematical foundation for the theory of the electron.

Pauli’s scientific career began with remarkable speed. He was born on 25 April 1900 in Vienna. After graduating from the Döblinger-Gymnasium in 1918, he published his first paper just two months later. This paper examined Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Pauli later studied at the University of Munich under Arnold Sommerfeld. He earned his Ph.D. in 1921 with a thesis on the quantum theory of ionized diatomic hydrogen. Shortly after, he wrote a 237-page review of relativity for an encyclopedia. Einstein himself praised this work, and it became a standard scientific reference.

In 1930, Pauli made another profound prediction regarding the nature of energy. While studying beta decay, he noticed that energy appeared to be missing. To preserve the law of conservation of energy, he proposed a tiny, neutral particle existed. Enrico Fermi later named this particle the neutrino, which means "little neutral one" in Italian. Pauli suggested the neutrino had a very small mass, no more than 1% of a proton's mass. The neutrino remained a theoretical idea until 1956, when Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan finally detected it. Upon hearing the news, Pauli sent a telegram saying, "Everything comes to him who knows how to wait."

Pauli’s professional life took him across many famous institutions. He lectured at the University of Hamburg from 1923 to 1928. In 1928, he became a Professor of Theoretical Physics at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. He also held positions at the University of Michigan and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. His scientific impact was recognized with many honors. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1945 after being nominated by Albert Einstein. He was also awarded the Lorentz Medal in 1930 and the Max Planck Medal in 1958.

Beyond physics, Pauli had a deep interest in the human mind. In 1932, following a personal crisis, he began working with the psychiatrist Carl Jung. They collaborated to explore the relationship between physics and psychology. They discussed topics like synchronicity and the interpretation of archetypal dreams. Their many conversations were recorded in the Pauli/Jung letters, now published as "Atom and Archetype." Jung even documented his analysis of over 400 of Pauli's dreams in his book "Psychology and Alchemy."

Pauli’s life ended with a curious coincidence that many found striking. He spent much of his career obsessed with a mathematical value called the fine-structure constant. This is a dimensionless fundamental constant that is approximately 1/137. In 1958, Pauli fell ill with pancreatic cancer and was treated at a hospital in Zurich. When his assistant, Charles Enz, visited him, Pauli asked if he had noticed the room number. The room was number 137. Pauli passed away in that room on 15 December 1958.
