William Wyler was a legendary film director and producer.

Making a movie with Wyler required a lot of focus and skill. He was famous for using a technique called deep-focus cinematography. This means he used special lenses to keep everything in a scene sharp. You could see things far away and things close up at the same time. This allowed him to show many characters moving in one long shot. He also worked closely with actors to help them become stars. For example, Bette Davis said his direction made her a much better actress.
Wyler was born in Mulhouse in 1902. His father, Leopold, was a traveling salesman and a haberdasher. A haberdasher is someone who sells small items for clothing like hats or ties. Wyler grew up watching concerts, the opera, and early movies. In 1921, he moved to the United States to work for Universal Studios. He met Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal, through his mother. At first, Wyler worked as a messenger in New York. He even had to pay back the cost of his ship trip from his small weekly pay.
His career at Universal Studios grew very quickly. By 1925, he was the youngest director at the studio. In 1929, he directed Hell's Heroes, which was Universal's first sound film shot entirely on location. He later won Academy Awards for Mrs. Miniver in 1942 and The Best Years of Our Lives in 1946. His third win was for the famous film Ben-Hur in 1959. These films were also winners for Best Picture. He was nominated for many other films like Roman Holiday and The Little Foxes. His work was successful from the 1930s all the way to the 1960s.
Wyler's life shows how passion can lead to great success. He started with very little money and worked his way up from cleaning sets. He even served in the New York Army National Guard for a year. During World War II, he joined the service along with other directors like John Huston. His movies often connected with people during important times in history. For instance, The Best Years of Our Lives helped people understand life after the war. He remains one of the most important names in the history of Hollywood movies.
