Wundt was born in Neckarau, Baden, on August 16, 1832. His father, Maximilian, was a Lutheran minister. Wundt studied at several universities, including Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Berlin. He became a doctor of medicine in 1856. Later, he worked as an assistant to the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz. In 1875, he became a professor at the University of Leipzig. This was a very important place for his new scientific work.

In 1879, Wundt opened the first formal laboratory for psychological research.

This lab was located at the University of Leipzig. It eventually grew to include eleven different rooms. Wundt also started the first journals to share research findings. A 1991 survey of historians ranked him first for "all-time eminence." He ranked higher than other famous figures like William James and Sigmund Freud.

One of Wundt's greatest legacies was his role as a teacher.

He supervised 185 doctoral students between 1875 and 1919. Of these students, 70 were foreigners from places like Russia, Poland, and America. Many of his students became leaders in the field. For instance, James McKeen Cattell became the first psychology professor in the United States. Granville Stanley Hall became a leader in child psychology. Many American psychologists can trace their academic lineage back to Wundt's students.

Wundt's impact reached far beyond the classroom. His work connected various fields like philosophy, physiology, and anthropology. He even developed a system of ethics based on his psychological concepts. His influence was recognized globally through many honors. He was nominated three times for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. An asteroid, Vundtia (635), was also named in his honor. Wundt died on August 3, 1920, at the age of 88. He is buried in Leipzig's South Cemetery alongside his wife, Sophie.
